I took a picnic with me and sat in a cemetery, alone, lostening to birdsong, and the distant sound of laughing children, and I almost cried. (Actually, as I wrote this I realised the English writer Sebastian Faulks wrote a book about WW1 set in the Somme, called Birdsong....)

It was hard to imagine what it was like in the mud and snow and death and stench all around on this most beautiful of spring days in the French countryside - so beautiful it ACHED (do you know that feeling?)

Pics here: http://percysmith.blogspot.com/2007/04/chapter-16-somme-9-july-6-september.html

Then the next day I went to Villers-Bretonneux and Bullecourt for the Anzac Day ceremonies.

N'oublions JAMAIS.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7578502161069698346.post-9380041430668509012008-11-11T20:07:00.000+01:002008-11-11T20:07:00.000+01:00Also I would like to say in english that in my can...Also I would like to say in english that in my canadian city there is a monument that lists the names of canadian soldiers that did not return from world war two and beside the torch of freedom I see a young oncles name that I have never met and it is heart rending..ichandraehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15811270910107431763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7578502161069698346.post-92000764101485871242008-11-11T19:43:00.000+01:002008-11-11T19:43:00.000+01:00I should say in english also that the poem In Flan...I should say in english also that the poem In Flanders Field is written on the back of our ten dollar canadian bill.It is surrounded with poppies and it is beautiful and humanizing to see this on our canadian currency.ichandraehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15811270910107431763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7578502161069698346.post-48728330804236775392008-11-11T19:26:00.000+01:002008-11-11T19:26:00.000+01:00Regardless Nathalie of Europe as a political conce...Regardless Nathalie of Europe as a political concept or any other arguments about the peace not lasting you feel as if the peace is longlasting, and I feel your gratitude deeply.thankyou.
