Back kitchen

From the street looking in, a stolen photo taken through the kitchen window of a city café.
Soccer on the giant screen TV kept patrons and waiter looking the other way. I slipped my camera through the bars and shot quickly. The steak and egg plates are ready on the kitchen bench but they will have to wait. The waiter is mesmerized: sports come first!

  6. Nathalie, This is a superbly done and fun sneaky shot. I love all the detail and how sharp and crisp your shot is. We could be in the kitchen ourselves here!

  8. Tight quarters in that tiny kitchen. I imagine when everyone is really WORKING, it gets pretty hectic.

  9. Ooooh, yes! What soccer is it now? Don't they ever have an off-season these days?

Here’s what happens when you wait a couple of hours to see the pope pass by…

  10. I have to confess the photo is a couple of weeks old: it was taken on the night of the soccer Euro 2008 final !

  11. The photograph provides a great glimpse (and priorities) to the inner sanctum of a restaurant.
Not to worry about the date, as I doubt the food being served two weeks later could be any colder ;-)

  12. I love stolen photographs. Gosh, horse steaks do I read? We have a horse meat butcher in Menton market but I've never actually seen it on a menu.

When Italy and France played each other one time in the World Cup (I think) the Cafe de Paris in Monaco had to put televisions on the ledges between the tables so patrons could watch and eat - else the place would have been empty! Perhaps the chefs had a television too.

  13. Jilly, the French expression "steak à cheval" does not mean "steak de cheval" (horse steak) but steak with mirror egg on top. I have no idea how the name came about, I suppose the egg is riding the steak as if on horseback ?!?
