Church regains roof

Villeneuve lès AvignonDo some of you remember the photo of a bulldozer inside a church I posted on June 20th? It was digging in order to install an elevator. As very rarely happens in France, this church is to be converted to something else. I asked you to guess what. You came up with a wealth of responses : restaurant (MacDonald's!), art gallery, gym, tourist office, public baths, night club, library, car park (for heaven's sake!)... I went back to check on the works' progress and here are some updated photos. So thanks for your patience, here's the answer: the church will be the city's new media library cum official employment agency (pôle emploi). How do you feel about that? Happy or disappointed? I'd love to come and read books in such a beautiful environment but I'm not sure about coming here to look for work.

Certains d'entre vous se souviennent-ils de la photo d'un bulldozer dans une église que j'avais postée le 20 juin dernier ? Il creusait pour installer un ascenseur. Comme cela se produit très rarement en France, cette église va être convertie en bâtiment laïque. Je vous avais proposé de deviner pour quel usage, vous avez été nombreux à offrir des suggestions : restaurant (MacDo !), galerie d'art, salle de gym, office du tourisme, bains publics, club, bibliothèque, parking ( ! )... J'y suis retournée pour suivre l'avancement des travaux, voici de nouvelles photos... et enfin la réponse : cette église va devenir médiathèque et agence pour l'emploi (ANPE qui devient Pôle Emploi). Alors, déçus ou heureux ? J'adorerais venir chercher mes livres ici, mais chercher du travail...

    Nathalie, your photos here must be the most unusual and dramatic ones in all Blogland today!!
    And I hope that man on the roof has said his prayers!
    Sounds like a good conversion. Hope the job seekers will be blessed with work.
    Now I'm going back to stare at that crane again...

    On lit d'abord les petites annonces côté médiathèque, on prend un numéro côté Pôle emploi... mais peut-on encore allumer une petite bougie en passant?
    Elle est grande cette église? On ne se rend pas bien compte.

    Je trouve ça super comme nouvelle vocation pour une église. Ici, malheureusement, les églises ferment souvent et sont soit détruits ou transformés en immeubles condos...

    Maybe they will call it "The Ministry of Work" or "The Ministry of Happiness" (if they were going to put a sort of 1984 spin on it). Ha!

    They look to be installing a beautiful roof - so kudos to them. But a mix of a library and a place to find work seems strange. At any rate it's not been knocked down and it's not going to be a McDonald's thank goodness.

    je suis de l'avis de Karine. Il faut proteger, reconstruire les belles eglises meme si ce n'est pas dans un but religieux.
    Pour l'Art et le respect des "constructeurs " de cathedrale du temps passe.
    J'aime beaucoup le melange ancien et pratique, clair et moderne et utile encore

    Pretty cool... that they're saving it, rather than letting it become another ruin dotting the landscape... not that I don't like ruins too... but it can live on as a building like this. Although odd that the Church would give up the property to the city.

    Anyway, I know how much you loved a certain photo of a black dog on a beach with a human female nearby... so I have to share with you another strangely similar photo I just found here :

    Happy!...because I really love to read books and I agree with you, the environment looks very beautiful.

    magnifique photo-les jeux d'ombrages
    oui Nathalie j'aime cette conversion parceque je crois que après l'église la bibliothèque est un des endroits le plus sacré pour l'humanité.
    C'est un peu bizarre pour les autres gens mais quand j'entre dans une église je pense à une école ou une bibliothèque.-Bien c'est notre civilizations cela....
    et quand j'entre dans les grandes bibliothèque de l'université je pense aux églises

    Wow. I am very impressed with the rafter construction overhead. That is first class and I hope they are able to reveal that work of art when the building is finished. It would be so nice to be able to look up and see all that wood.

    Qu'une église devienne une agence pour l'emploi... c'est bien et c'est inquiétant à la fois ! Celà veut dire qu'il y a beaucoup plus de chômeurs ! Et qu'il y a moins de travail !... Que vont-ils trouver là alors ? Du travail ou du réconfort ?...;)

    What a wonderful use for this old church building! I'm a member of a heritage group here in South Africa, and of late they are also turning some old churches, buildings and heritage houses into educational centres etc. so the building is restored, and put to good use - that's a win-win in my mind!
