Chapelle Sainte Marthe

Rue SambucThe tiny chapel whose steps you can see on the right of my photo is attached to the back of Hôpital Sainte Marthe. For centuries, prayers there followed the hospital's rhythm of life and death. But the old hospital is now Avignon's university and the chapel is closed most of the time. While many students walk past it during the day, it's a very quiet part of town at night. I was there at 11:00 pm and there wasn't a soul in sight - quite a contrast to other streets which the theatre festival keeps alive till very late at night - see below and Dancing in the night.

La petite chapelle dont vous voyez les marches à droite de ma photo est attachée à l'arrière de l'hôpital Sainte Marthe. Pendant des siècles, des prières y ont accompagné la vie de l'hopital. Mais l'hopital est maintenant devenu l'université d'Avignon et la chappelle est fermée la majeure partie du temps. Si de nombreux étudiants passent par ici dans la journée, le soir ce quartier est très silencieux. Il était 23h quand j'ai pris cette photo et il n'y avait pas une âme en vue, alors que dans d'autres parties de la ville le festival fait vivre les rues jusque tard dans la nuit - voir ci-dessous et Dancing in the night.vig

    Vieux marin, je crois bien que le panneau d'information mis là par l'office du tourisme indique chapelle Sainte Marthe, mais je t'accorde volontiers plus de science que moi. Merci pour tes lumières !

    Le site de la mairie d'Avignon, dans la "promenade de la Carreterie" dit :

    « À l’angle de la rue Sambuc nous trouvons la façade à deux étages, sommée d’un fronton, de la chapelle des religieuses de Saint-Joseph qui étaient en charge de l’hôpital. Édifiée en 1751 par Jean-Baptiste Franque "elle est la plus élégante et la plus gracieuse des constructions religieuses réalisées par lui" (J. Girard). »

    What a very "beautiful" photograph of the Chapel/Hôpital Sainte Marthe...I had to stop what I was doing in order to post my comment.

    Oh! Yes, I remember the
    "movement" in your photograph Dancing in the Night....in contrast to the
    "stillness" that is presence in this photograph of the Chapel/Hôpital Sainte Marthe.

    is that a window opening into a private home on the right hand side of the second picture? how amazing to live right there on that street
