L'étincelle

With theaters closing down and people walking in and out all the time, I used the general anthill activity as an excuse to sneak in to the lovely little theater called L'étincelle (the spark). I was actually encouraged to take photos. Isn't the lobby the cutest thing ever? You can see the theater's facade in my previous post.

Avec tous les théatres qui ferment, il est facile de profiter de l'activité de fourmilière qui y règne pour se glisser à l'intérieur et prendre quelques photos - on m'y a d'ailleurs vivement encouragée. Je trouve le foyer du théatre l'Etincelle absolument charmant. Vous pouvez en voir la façade dans mon billet précédent.

Post office / La Poste
3:00 p.m. at the general post office : prenez un ticket, take a ticket, says the blue sign on the left. But how not to lose hope when number 409 is being served and you draw number 432? I was lucky that I had my camera with me and I enjoyed catching the horizontal winter sun painting bright stripes on people's backs.

Trois heures de l'après-midi à la grande poste: Prenez un ticket dit le panneau bleu à gauche. Mais comment ne pas désespérer quand on tire le numéro 432 et qu'on est en train de servir le numéro 409 ? J'ai eu de la chance, j'avais mon appareil photo avec moi et j'ai joué à saisir le long soleil d'hiver peignant des rayures lumineuses sur le dos des gens.

Hotel d'Europe - place Crillon

Yesterday ended in rain. Let's take refuge in the cosy and luxurious comfort of one of Avignon's best hotels, Hotel d'Europe. Magnificent 18th century mansion, thick carpets, antique furniture everywhere. Here a detail of a console in the grand staircase. In Richard's Zurich this would have been black and white and I love what he does... but at the end of the day I like the golden light too much.

La journée d'hier s'est terminée en pluie. Allons nous réfugier dans le luxe feutré d'un des plus jolis hôtels d'Avignon, l'Hôtel d'Europe. Magnifique hôtel particulier du XVIIIe, tapis épais, antiquités un peu partout. Ici le détail d'une console placée à mi-étage dans le grand escalier. Richard à Zurich nous l'aurait mise en noir et blanc et j'apprécie énormément ce qu'il fait... mais au fond j'aime trop cette lumière blonde pour m'y résoudre.

Outside looking in

At number 57 in Rue de la République in Villeneuve-les-Avignon, there's this old shop which a long time ago used to be a dry cleaner's, as attested by the faded Teinturerie sign. Walking past, I just couldn't help myself from taking a peep inside. Through the window left of the shop, THIS is what I saw:

Au numéro 57 de la rue de la république à Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, il y a un vieux magasin en piteux état dont l'enseigne Teinturerie est presque effacée. En passant, je n'ai pas pu m'empêcher de coller mon nez à la vitre pour regarder à l'intérieur. Et par la fenêtre à gauche du magasin, voici ce que j'ai vu :
Are you as surprised as I was? Crammed with objects, storage boxes and paintings, the room was extremely dusty and didn't look lived in at all. What are your reactions? Are you also of the curious type who take a peep inside people's homes whenever they can?

Etes-vous aussi surpris que je l'ai été ? Cette chambre séparée du magasin, remplie d'objets, de cartons et de tableaux, était extrêmement poussiéreuse et semblait totalement abandonnée. Qu'en pensez-vous ? Etes-vous comme moi d'un genre curieux, et regardez-vous chez les gens par la fenêtre quand vous en avez l'occasion ?
