Quand les danseurs de l'opéra-théâtre d'Avignon rencontrent des musiciens de jazz...
When Avignon's Opera ballet dancers meet live jazz music it's a joy not to be missed. The "Jazz & swing melodies" show performed last Saturday 28th January 2012 will be shown again on 26th May in Montfavet. If you're around, make sure you go. It's free - does it get any better than this?
Last days of January. After the party the city can't bring herself to clean up the rouge on her cheeks - hasty makeup putting magic in our nights.
Yes it's that bridge again, the famous Pont d'Avignon - I'd never caught it at twilight before.
Same sideways light in rue Petramale a few minutes later, around 11:00 AM.
Using a blonde beauty as a selling trick for any type of product is a long-standing marketing trick. The twist here is to give it a vintage look. I've seen these adverts all over Avignon's cafes. Worth noting, the compulsory warning at the bottom of the ad: "Pour votre santé, évitez de manger entre les repas" - for your health, avoid nibbling between meals. Then comes a link to the www.mangerbouger.fr website, the national guide to healthy eating habits. The governement recently introduced a new tax on all soft drinks containing either added sugar or artificial sweeteners. Do you think it's a good idea? I do. I have no sympathy for junk food.

Sketchcrawl in Avignon on Saturday 21st January. Eight of us, great fun. See a few of our works below. Sketch crawl is an international event where people meet for a full day of fun sketching around town together. More information on sketchcrawl.com and for images of this event all over the world, click on Results for the cities you'd like to see. You'll find Avignon in the list.

Should I admit? This is a collage of two photos, under and above the horizon. Both were taken within minutes of each other along the beach at Palavas near Montpellier, a 90-mn drive from Avignon. The wind was blowing strong and kitesurfers regularly made spectacular jumps, but above the sea of course, not above the sand.
Meanwhile, on that bright and sunny but very cold afternoon, ordinary folk would take a stroll along the beach - some with typically French elegance and style.
Sunrise on the Mediterranean in Sete on Sunday 8th January - seen from both sides of a large concrete pipe I found on the beach, ready to be used in some sewage project I presume.
Lone pigeon flight. If you wonder what scared him, check out the bottom photo. I'm sure you will then be able to spot the dog in the top photo.
Continuing on yesterday's post, what else is new on the street art scene? I found in a narrow back lane a caption you might have read before : "what matters isn't the fall but the landing", certainly a reference to the movie La Haine (Hate or hatred) by Mathieu Kassovitz (1995) where the main characters often repeat the same joke about a man who falls from the 50th floor and keeps saying to himself 'so far so good, so far so good' - but what matters of course is the moment you land... Indeed the movie ends tragically. And right across from the caption is a life-size image of the Pied Piper of Hamelin with rats gathering around him (the fun bit is you can see more rats further up the street, all heading in his direction).
Would you have a caption for this portrait of a laughing President Nicolas Sarkozy wearing a crown?
Scary, spooky, magical, mysterious ? What do these deep woods evoke for you ?

Still in the fog on the hill across from Gordes, this time looking towards the sun with a fiery flare.
As promised yesterday, here's the village of Gordes emerging from the fog on January 1st. The fog came and went and the scenery changed every ten seconds. Take your time to enjoy the views, I'm taking a short winter break. Back next Friday. Have a great week everyone!

Me on 1st January 2012. What a spectacular start to the year!
I was standing on monkey rock overlooking the village and plains of Gordes. Over a period of fifteen minutes I watched the fog rise from the valley and progressively engulf the village. In my next post you'll see only the tip of it left.
Flash back to last August: the village of Gordes, one of the prettiest in France, is photographed a zillion times each day by tourists from this very spot : a sign announces the lookout and a large car park makes stopping easy. To make my own photo a little bit different I stepped down onto a rock below. Do you find this scary?
View of the sky taken in my mother's garden, 40 kilometres west of Paris on 27th December. My mum and I found this crisscross of lines pretty spectacular but I had no particular intention of posting the photo (this isn't Avignon) until I discovered that my good old friend Peter had posted an amazingly similar image on his blog, see his post here. I checked with him, he confirmed the photo was taken on 27th December. Isn't it an incredible coincidence that he and I photographed the sky at the same time?
Amazingly, these two images of fog were taken on the same day, respectively one hour before and one hour after the top one, outside the same village. Fog came and went in patches all morning on that day.
'Photo of the Year 2011' is the theme chosen by City Daily Photo bloggers on this first day of 2012. I selected this one, 'Catholic leaving church', because I'm particularly happy with its composition and timing - the person's arm and shadow on the right really do it for me. If you follow this blog regularly, is there another of my photos that you would have selected instead of this one?
