Theme day: Water

This month's theme is for City Daily Photo bloggers is water. Where else to go for water in but to the Rhône, the river that has fed and modeled the city for centuries? I'm particularly happy with this photo because it shows Avignon's own resident pelican. Pelicans don't normally live in France but this one arrived last summer (no-one's really sure where from) and seems to have adapted well. It goes fishing quite far up and down the river so it is seldom seen, let alone that close. I was hiding behind a parked car whose roof creates the reflection you see in the foreground. When I tried to approach it, the pelican quickly walked to the water, threw itself in and paddled away.

Le thème du mois pour les bloggeurs du réseau City Daily Photos est l'eau sous toutes ses formes. L'eau à Avignon, c'est d'abord le Rhône, le fleuve qui a nourri et façonné la ville pendant des siècles. Je suis particulièrement fière de cette photo car on y voit le seul pélican qui réside ici. Pas de pélicans d'habitude en France mais celui est arrivé l'été dernier, on ne sait pas vraiment d'où, et semble s'être très bien acclimaté. Il peut partir pêcher assez loin en amont ou en aval, ce qui fait qu'on le voit rarement, surtout de si près. Ici j'étais cachée derrière une voiture garée, dont le toit crée le reflet du premier plan. Dès que j'ai tenté d'approcher un peu, le pélican a filé d'une démarche pataude, s'est jeté à l'eau et s'est éloigné rapidement.

Of art and umbrellas

Another exhibit takes place this weekend in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, just across the river Rhône. Over three days from Saturday 29th to Monday 31st March, the Living Art studio (Atelier Art Vivant) displays the works of its members under the heading "Man and umbrella". Many were interesting but I found this one quite striking. A black umbrella, a pair of gumboots and a shower hose: a very simple composition but remarkably balanced and brilliantly staged. How to interpret it? Are you supposed to enter the shower naked under the umbrella, immersing yourself in a totally surreal scene as water fills up your boots? Or is it meant to be a Let's pretend it rains home device where you slip into the boots and hide from the shower rain under the umbrella as you happily replay 'Singing in the rain' to your loved one? Oh how I enjoy umbrellas that open onto daydreams. Do you?

Une autre exposition d'art contemporain se tient ce week-end, à Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, juste de l'autre côté du Rhône. Pendant trois jours de samedi 29 au lundi 31 mars l'Atelier Art Vivant expose les travaux de ses membres sur le thème 'L'homme et le parapluie'. Beaucoup d'oeuvres étaient intéressantes mais celle-ci en particulier m'a beaucoup plu. Un parapluie, une paire de bottes et un flexible de douche : une composition toute simple mais d'un équilibre parfait et remarquablement mise en scène. Comment l'interpréter ? Entre-t-on nu sous le parapluie pour prendre sa douche avec les bottes aux pieds, en immersion totale dans une scène surréaliste où l'eau remplit vos bottes ? Ou est-ce un dispositif pour jouer à la pluie chez soi en enfilant les bottes et en s'abritant de la pluie-douche sous l'ombrelle noire tout en chantant 'Un p'tit coin d'parapluie' à sa belle ? Oh que j'aime ces baleines ouvertes sur le rêve. Et vous ?

Quoi de neuf ?

Quoi de neuf means 'What's up". Bugs Bunny's favorite sentence 'What's up, doc?' becomes 'Quoi de neuf, docteur ?' in French. But nothing to do with Bugs Bunny, this is the name of a contemporary art exhibition currently on at Hotel Cloitre St Louis. This beautiful ancient cloister is worth a visit in its own right but the exhibit is nice too. I've selected a few pieces for you. This dish of tagliatelle for example - look closely at the fork, it continues as pasta. It's titled "Usage unique" by Suzy Lelièvre. Is this art? It's an old debate but what a fun idea.

Quoi de neuf, c'est le nom d'une exposition d'art contemporain qui se tient actuellement à l'hôtel du Cloître Saint Louis. Le cloître, absolument magnifique, vaut à lui seul le détour, mais l'expo ne manque pas d'intérêt. Voici quelques-unes des pièces qui m'ont le plus plu. Ce plat de pâtes, par exemple, intitulé "Usage Unique" par Suzy Lelièvre. La fourchette se continue en tagliatelles. Est-ce de l'art ? Vieux débat, mais j'aime l'idée.

D'Armelle Caron, dans la série 'Pour toujours', adhésif noir posé directement sur le mur blanc avec pour titre 'Boire la tasse'. Une jeune femme apparait pour toujours attachée à sa tasse (thé ? café ?) comme s'il s'agissait d'un masque à oxygène. Une réflexion sur la dépendance au quotidien ?

This is actually a video so my photo doesn't do justice to it. Think of a girl standing in front of you, eyes blinking from time to time, looking very much alive, wearing a light fixture as some sort of a crown. Then the light fixture starts swinging left and right, slowly at first then in a more ample motion. Tearing off from the body, the head follows, attached to the light fixture. The effect is quite hypnotic. As time goes by, the swinging motion slowly decreases and the head finally returns to its inital position. Weird and fascinating. Ici il s'agit d'une vidéo; ma photo ne peut lui rendre justice. Une jeune femme se tient face à vous, très vivante, battant des paupières par moments, quand lentement le lustre qu'elle porte sur la tête en guise de diadème se met à se balancer à gauche et à droite... et la tête suit, se détachant du corps. Le mouvement de balancier devient de plus en plus ample, l'effet est presque hypnotique, puis progressivement le mouvement décroit et la tête reprend tout doucement place sur le corps. Mr. postman's bike

With narrow streets and nowhere to park, mail delivery is done by bike in Avignon's historic centre, like in many other city centres in France. This is rue des Teinturiers, one of Avignon's oldest and most picturesque streets. You're seeing it in "off season" mode, quiet and empty, but in summer it becomes one of the city's busiest areas with restaurants, cafés and shops bursting with life.

Les rues du centre ville sont si étroites avec si peu de chances de se garer que le facteur fait sa tournée à vélo dans le centre d'Avignon, comme dans de nombreuses villes de France d'ailleurs. Voici la rue des Teinturiers, l'une des rues les plus anciennes et les plus pittoresques du vieil Avignon. Vide et calme l'hiver, elle devient l'un des coins les plus animés de la cité pendant l'été : boutiques, cafés et restaurants y débordent de vie.

Parcel delivery is done by car. Everyone in France instantly recognises the yellow "La Poste" vehicles with their airmail logo.

Seule la livraison des paquets se fait en voiture. Tout le monde en France reconnaît instantanément les camionnettes jaunes de la poste et le logo qui évoque le courrier par avion. Pour la petite histoire, le graffiti violet sur le mur du fond dit "promoteur immobilier = pourris".

No surf in Avignon

Congratulations to Alex and Corentin who came up with the correct answer yesterday: yes this is Rip Curl's logo - famous Australian makers of surfing wetsuits and surfwear. A tiny bit of surfboard on the left gave a clue. The Search refers to all surfers' never-ending worldwide quest for THE ultimate perfect wave. The Rip Curl Pro surfing contest is on at the moment at Bells Beach, south of Melbourne,Victoria (17-29 March 2008). Sea, surf and sun - I can't think of an environment more remote from the urban and grey façade shown in my photo. Surfwear is very popular with Avignon's teenagers; is it the same where you live ?

L'amorce d'une planche de surf à gauche donnait un indice. The Search représente la recherche insatiable par les surfeurs de La Vague Parfaite sur toutes les mers du globe. Le championnat Rip Curl Pro se déroule actuellement à Bells Beach, au sud de Melbourne dans le Victoria (du 17 au 29 mars 2008). Sea, surf and sun, un univers bien éloigné des strictes façades grises et urbaines de ma photo d'hier ! Les vêtements de marque de style surfeur sont assez à la mode chez les jeunes d'Avignon. C'est la même chose chez vous ?

The Search

Shop windows in Avignon sometimes offer weird images to those who care to look at reflections. This one is located in Rue Carnot. Can you tell me what The Search is about ? The logo and motto will mean a lot to those in the know. Are you one of them?

Rain, hail or shine

Rain, hail AND shine! Hectic weather in Provence over the Easter weekend : freezing northerly winds, menacing clouds, and hail just a few kilometres away under those dark stormy clouds, but nothing could dampen the spirit of our family gathering. See my nephew's happy jumping spree!

Temps très perturbé sur la Provence ce week-end de Pâques : vent glacial, nuages menaçants, de la grêle à quelques kilomètres de nous sous ces énormes nuages noirs, mais rien n'a pu entamer la chaleur de nos retrouvailles familiales. Mon neveu saute de joie !

Red flags flapping in the cold wind against the deep blue sky, yesterday's demonstration in front of Avignon's town hall was an eye trap for someone like me. This was one of the many marches organised nationwide yesterday to protest against the 11,000 job cuts in public education announced by President Sarkozy's government for next year. Specifically here the demonstration was about a planned 30 job cuts at Jean Giono College, one of Orange's* high schools, as from next September. French lesson of the day: "En grève" means "on strike". A word you'd better know if you travel to France because chances are that you will at some stage be affected by one. Strikes are part and parcel of life in France!
Talking about street action, I'll spare a thought today for the Tibetan people facing Chinese repression...
(*Orange is a small town north of Avignon. Beautiful Roman ruins there...)

Drapeaux rouges claquant dans le mistral sur fond de ciel bleu, la manifestation d'hier devant l'Hotel de Ville d'Avignon devait forcément m'attirer l'oeil. Avignon s'est joint aux multiples manifestations nationales contre les onze mille suppressions d'emplois dans l'éducation nationale annoncés par le gouvernement. Spécifiquement ici, les enseignants en grève du Collège Jean Giono d'Orange protestaient contre la menace de suppression de 30 emplois dans leur établissement dès la rentrée prochaine.
A propos de manifs, j'adresse aujourd'hui une pensée de soutien au peuple Tibétain qui fait face à la répression chinoise...

Red sky in winter

Red sky? No I haven't turned daltonian. If you look carefully in the shadows at the bottom of these houses you'll read the name of this lively pub on Place Pie. With a huge outdoor terrace and a large screen on which sports fans can watch all live sports events, the Red Sky is a very popular place both day and night. Interestingly enough all its outside signage is in English: it reads "Good Food - Whiskies - Wines and Spirits - Ales and Stouts". I'm not sure at all English is spoken inside, though.
I like the way the large plane trees cast their shadow on the facade, but it won't be long before spring changes that. Despite the cold mistral blowing today, tiny buds are exploding everywhere!

Red sky ? Non, le ciel n'est pas rouge mais si vous fouillez du regard l'ombre au pied de ces maisons de ville vous y lirez le nom de ce pub très animé situé au coin de la place Pie. Offrant une immense terrasse ensoleillée et un grand écran pour regarder tous les événement sportifs, le Red Sky est un lieu qui ne désemplit pas, de jour comme de nuit. Le look 'pub anglais' est accentué par les détails de décoration et les inscriptions 'Good food - Whiskies - Wines and Spirits - Ales and Stouts' en devanture. (Tout en anglais ? Sky, Mister Allgood ! L'un d'entre vous se souvient-il de cette fabuleuse formule ?)
J'aime l'ombre nue des grands platanes de la place sur ces façades, mais ça va changer très vite : malgré le mistral qui souffle aujourd'hui, les bourgeons éclatent à vue d'oeil !

Unfaithful

Calanque de Port Pin, 16 March, 4:30 p.m.

There was lots going on this weekend in Avignon: local elections, a Globe-trotter festival, a Clown festival and an arts and crafts exhibition, but exceptionally I'll be unfaithful to my city. I spent Sunday in the calanques of Cassis, just east of Marseilles. A two hour drive from Avignon, the calanques are one the most strikingly beautiful parts of the French Mediterranean coast. I just had to share that with you.

Il s'est passé plein de choses à Avignon ce week-end : les élections municipales, le festival des Globe Trotters, un festival de Clowns, une exposition d'artisanat, mais exceptionnellement je serai infidèle à ma ville : je suis allée passer ce dimanche dans les calanques de Cassis. Un pur bonheur que j'avais envie de partager avec vous.

A very typical tourist shot of the calanques but how could I avoid it? The colour of the sea is stupendous.

Rooftop terrace

Another view from my window. It's reading time on our rooftop terrace. We're so close to the sky up there. The only shadows are cast by the chimney and TV antenna in very graphic lines.

Encore une vue depuis ma fenêtre. Moment de lecture intense sur la terrasse sur le toit. Ici on est tout près du ciel. Seules la cheminée et l'antenne télé font de l'ombre - une ombre très graphique.

I wrote the above message last night but this morning I heard on the radio that Reporters Sans Frontières (Reporters Without Borders http://www.rsf.org/ ) is lauching today the first International Online Free Expression Day, a worldwide online protest against government censorship on the Internet.
Why is it important? A total of 62 cyber-dissidents are currently in jail worldwide for using their right to free expression on the Internet. China continues to be the world’s biggest prison for online journalists and bloggers.

Pourquoi est-ce important ? Actuellement 62 cyberdissidents sont en prison pour avoir usé de leur droit à la liberté d'expression sur le Web. La Chine reste la plus grande prison pour les journalistes en ligne et les bloggeurs.

Mon voisin est violoniste

An unexpected side effect of the tree pruning we've had a few weeks ago is that it has cleared the view over our neighbours. Another unexpected side effect of spring coming is that my neighbour regularly practices his violin on his balcony. He plays jazz music, it's a delight to hear. When he plays I always open my windows wide to enjoy it better. Please practice as often as you like my friend, I love it!

Un effet secondaire inattendu de l'élagage de nos platanes il y a quelques semaines est qu'on voit beaucoup mieux nos voisins. Un autre effet secondaire inattendu du printemps qui arrive est que mon voisin s'installe souvent sur son balcon pour jouer du violon. Il joue du jazz, c'est un régal à entendre. Quand il joue, j'ouvre toutes mes fenêtre pour mieux en profiter. Merci cher voisin, répétez autant que vous voulez, j'adore !

Vote for Jacques Prévert

It's election day everywhere in France today - we're electing our mayors and city council members. We have about half a dozen lists of candidates here in Avignon but my favourite electoral poster is this one, which sudddenly appeared overnight yesterday: "Keep in touch with the child within. Vote for Jacques Prévert". Jacques Prévert (1900-1977) is a French poet, artist and song writer whose free spirit was a joy and an inspiration to many including me. He died fourty years ago but it's lovely to find his spirit is still in the air. Do take the time to read a few of his quotes here (the English translations could be better but at least they're here).

Elections municipales aujourd'hui partout en France. Nous avons une demi-douzaine de candidats à Avignon mais mon affiche électorale préférée est celle-ci, apparue soudainement hier dans les rues de mon quartier : "Gardez votre âme d'enfant. Votez Jacques Prévert". On ne présente plus Jacques Prévert (1900-1977), poète dont l'esprit libre a réjoui et inspiré de millions d'aficionados dont moi. Il est mort il y a quarante ans mais mais je remercie l'afficheur anonyme de nous l'avoir rendu pour un instant de poésie. Relisez quelques-uns de ses poèmes ici et de ses chansons là.

What's wrong with this?

The other day I went to the street market which is held every Saturday morning alongside the remparts in Boulevard Limbert. At 12:30 all was pretty much said and done but never mind: packing up is a rarely shown aspect of street markets and I love taking unusual shots. But while I was photographing this stack of cawliflowers in their colourful 'Provence' cases (oh so typical!) the vendor came up to me and nervously asked why I was taking taking this picture. I smiled and said it was just for my pleasure, but he didn't seem quite convinced and appeared very concerned. The same thing happened again at another stall further down. I just couldn't see what the problem was so I started chatting with the young man. He ended up being very friendly and explained why the stall holder could get into trouble if this photo was shown. Oooh I understand now. What about you, can you guess? Hint: it's about not meeting regulations. Think hard before you turn to the comments, the answer will be there tomorrow.

L'autre jour je suis allée au marché qui se tient tous les samedis matin le long des remparts boulevard Limbert. A midi trente, plus grand-chose à voir, on remballait. Pas grave, on voit rarement cet aspect des marchés et j'adore prendre des photos 'différentes'. J'entreprends donc de photographier cette belle pile de choux-fleurs dans leurs cageots marqués 'Provence' quand je me fais alpaguer par le marchand qui me demande, l'air très soucieux, pourquoi je fais ça. En souriant je lui réponds que c'est pour mon plaisir mais il n'a pas l'air convaincu du tout. Même scène un peu plus loin, même réaction de défiance, un jeune homme vient me demander pourquoi je prends des photos. Comme je ne comprends pas où est le problème, j'entreprends de le faire parler un peu. Il se détend et finit par m'expliquer pourquoi le vendeur pourrait avoir des ennuis si cette photo était montrée. Aaaah, je comprends ! Et vous, avez-vous deviné pourquoi ? Je vous donne un indice : non-respect de la réglementation. Réfléchissez avant d'aller voir les commentaires, la réponse y sera demain.

No street vendor will be hurt in the making of this blog. I'm not dobbing anyone in. No distinctive sign on the truck, no number plate, no recognisable face. Cheers!

Pas de souci, je ne suis pas une balance. Pas de signe distinctif sur le camion, pas de numéro d'immatriculation, pas de visage reconnaissable. Personne n'aura d'ennuis à cause de moi.

Flowers and wine

Did you know the mimosa or wattle was originally from Australia and was imported on the Riviera by the British? Bright blue skies and strong wind today (the mistral is blowing), I'm taking you on an excursion to Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Just 16 kms north of Avignon, this beautiful village produces the region's most famous wine, a strong, full-bodied red. Rich and spicy with aromas of vanilla, red fruit and cinnamon it is best associated with red meat (roast beef, steak), game and strong cheese such as roquefort. The Chateauneuf-du-Pape (production 13.5 million bottles a year) is an elaborate blend of thirteen different grape varieties including Grenache, Syrah and Clairette (but also Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Muscardin, Cournoise, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan and Vaccarese, for those who are interested). Only the vineyards located within the boundaries of the village can claim the name. Most are still family-owned and operated. Throughout the village and in the countryside you'll find shops where you can do some serious wine-tasting before you purchase anything. Sounds like fun?

Aujourd'hui ciel bleu, jour de mistral, je vous emmène en excursion à Chateauneuf-du-Pape, un village situé à 16 km d'Avignon et célèbre pour... son vin, bien sûr, un rouge riche et généreux aux arômes de vanille, de fruits rouges et d'épices qui se marie particulièrement bien avec les viandes rouges, le coq au vin, le gibier et les fromages forts tels que le roquefort ou le maroilles. Le Chateauneuf du Pape (13,5 millions de bouteilles par an) est un savant mariage de 13 cépages différents : Grenache, Syrah, Clairette Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Muscardin, Cournoise, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan and Vaccarese, pour ceux que ça intéresse. On this photo (click to enlarge) you can see Roman tiled roofs, traditional village houses, stone walls, ochre coloured facades, crumbling remains of an ancient rampart, olive trees, cypresses, pine trees, and a small vineyard - pretty much a concentrate of Provence in one shot!
BTW, the name Chateauneuf-du-Pape litterally means 'Pope's Newcastle' : a few centuries ago the Popes had their summer residence there. But the castle is no longer 'new' - today only ruins remain.

Sur cette photo (cliquez pour l'agrandir) on voit des toits de tuiles romanes, des maisons de village en pierre, des murs couleurs d'ocre, un bout de rempart en ruine, des oliviers, des cyprès, des pins parasol et un petit champ de vigne -un vrai concentré de Provence ! Pour l'histoire, Chateauneuf du Pape tire son nom de ce qu'il y a quelques siècles, les Papes y avaient établi leur résidence d'été. Mais il y a belle lurette que le château qui domine le village n'est plus "neuf ": aujourd'hui il n'en reste que des ruines.

One is an anti-Sarkozy poster, the other is an advert for a concert by the Wriggles, both are widely spread in my neighbourhood where illegal bill posting abounds. I'd never heard of the Wriggles before - what a name! I discovered on the net that they're a French band, and quite a humorous lot too. You can listen to one of their songs here - you'll miss out if you don't understand French but you'll get to see their red costumes, very worm-like... it's intentional I suppose ;-)

L'une est une manifestation d'humeur anti-Sarkozy, l'autre une pub pour un concert des Wriggles, les deux sont partout dans les rues de mon quartier où l'affichage sauvage abonde. Je ne connaissais pas les Wriggles (drôle de nom, qui évoque en anglais le vermisseau se tortillant !). J'ai découvert sur le net que c'est un groupe français qui ne manque pas d'humour ; écoutez une de leurs chansons ici (ne vous arrêtez pas aux premières secondes dont la musique est immonde, ça s'améliore après et vous comprendrez l'histoire). Leurs pyjamas rouges sont-ils destinés à évoquer le lombric cité plus haut ?

Last day of fun

Yesterday was the last day to enjoy the fun fair. Avignon's Lunapark closed its door on Sunday night. It had been set up for a month from February 2nd to March 2nd on the large Parking des Italiens, northwest of town. The fair will move on to another town and will be back next year. So long!

At the bumper cars on Saturday afternoon I looked at three girls (not those you see in my photo), two wearing a scarf, one not, obviously enjoying themselves, driving with energy, looking for collisions. I thought to myself that the scarf didn't stop them from having fun like any other girl their age. But things turned unexpectedly sour when the ride was over. Getting out of her car, one of the girls went straight for an Asian-looking young man sitting in his car, verbally abusing him and waving menacing gestures. Looking completely bewildered he replied words that I could not hear while trying to avoid any contact. He was sitting, she was standing, towering over him, while her two girlfriends tried to restrain her. The bell rang, the bumper cars were about to start again, she finally turned back, pulled away by her friends. The guy stayed in his car for a new ride... but at the last second just couldn't refrain from giving her the finger. Incensed, she came right back at him and a new short session of verbal assault and high physical tension took place before she was dragged away by her friends for the second time. The cars resumed their erratic swirling and bumping, the three girls went on with their tour of the fair. I was left shaken. Girls involved in over-reactive urban violence? Thinking of it, it's not the first time I see it. So far I was proud to think that women, devoid of the excess of testosterone responsible for male violence, could and should bring peace to this world. Was I so wrong?

Dernier jour d'amusement hier. La fête foraine, installée pour un mois du 2 février au 2 mars au nord-ouest de la ville sur le grand parking des Italiens a fermé ses portes dimanche soir. Les forains ont commencé à démonter et vont poursuivre leur tournée ailleurs. Ils reviendront l'année prochaine. A bientot !

Samedi après-midi, aux auto tamponneuses, j'ai regardé un moment trois jeunes filles d'origine maghrébine (pas celles que vous voyez sur ma photo), deux portant le voile, la troisième non, qui s'en donnaient à coeur joie, conduisant avec énergie, cherchant les collisions. Je me suis dit que le voile ne les empêchait pas de vivre les plaisirs forts de leur âge. Les choses ont mal tourné quand la séance finie, l'une d'entre elles en sortant de son auto s'est précipitée vers un jeune homme de type asiatique qu'elle a violemment pris à parti, l'invectivant et multipliant les gestes de menace physique. Lui, resté dans son auto, l'air ébahi, répondait peu et essayait de ne pas se laisser toucher. Lui assis, elle debout, elle le dominait de sa hauteur, retenue par ses deux amies qui s'efforçaient de la tirer hors de la piste. La sonnerie a retenti, les autos allaient redémarrer, elle a fini par se laisser entrainer. Le jeune homme, lui, est resté dans son auto pour un autre tour... mais à l'ultime seconde, incapable de se contrôler, n'a pu s'empêcher de faire à l'excitée un bras d'honneur. La voilà revenue, prête à en découdre. Petite échauffourée, violence verbale, tension vibrante. Les deux filles retenant la troisième, les trois amies ont finalement quitté la piste. Les autos ont repris leur course erratique ponctuée de chocs, les filles ont poursuivi leur tournée des attractions. J'ai été très secouée par cette scène : les filles prises dans la violence urbaine à fleur de peau ? A la réflexion, ce n'est pas la première fois que je vois ça. Mais comme Renaud j'aimais jusqu'ici à penser "qu'aucune femme ne sera jamais aussi con que son frère, à part peut-être Madame Thatcher". J'aimais à penser que les femmes, débarrassées de l'excès de testostérone qui fait la bêtise des mâles, pouvaient et devaient avoir un effet apaisant sur les sociétés. Ai-je donc tellement tort ?

They weren't faking it and it lasted quite a while. It was a genuine French kiss.

Ils ne faisaient pas fait semblant et il ont pris leur temps. C'était un vrai baiser d'amoureux.

Nine Popes

Today 1st of March, City Daily bloggers worldwide chose "street murals and graffiti" as their monthly theme. I've already shown you a good number of graffiti here and there so how about a commissioned work for a change? This one could only be found here, it's "The nine Popes of Avignon" painted in the year 2000 by Agnes Saint Gal de Pons to decorate a blind wall in rue dorée. It evokes the nine Catholic popes which for a variety of reasons resided in Avignon rather than Rome between 1305 and 1403. From Clement V to Benoit XIII, each of these popes (see full list here) worked at building, fortifying, extending and embellishing the papal residence, the Popes' Palace, which today remains Avignon's central landmark. Rue dorée being a tiny back street, I doubt many tourists have seen this mural.

Aujourd'hui 1er mars, le thème choisi par les city daily bloggers est "murs peints et graffitis". Puisque je vous ai déjà abreuvé de graffitis ici et là, j'ai préféré cette fois-ci vous présenter une oeuvre officielle et qu'on ne pourrait voir nulle part ailleurs : "Les Neuf Papes d'Avignon", une fresque d'Agnès Saint Gal de Pons qui depuis l'an 2000 anime brillamment une façade aveugle dans la rue Dorée. De Clément V à Benoît XIII on y retrouve les portraits des neuf papes qui de 1305 à 1403 et pour des raisons diverses ont résidé à Avignon et non à Rome : Retrouvez leurs noms et toute l'histoire ici. Tous ont contribué à la construction, à l'extension, à la fortification et à l'embellissement de la résidence papale, le Palais des Papes, qui reste aujourd'hui le plus célèbre monument de la ville. La rue dorée étant une toute petite rue, je ne pense pas que les touristes soient nombreux à connaître cette fresque.
