Shop window in rue de la République - red & black fashion statement.
From the same vantage point as yesterday, this time not looking south towards Avignon but north (above) to the hilltop village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape with its vineyards overlooking the Rhone and (below) east to the plains. There was no wind on that day, the air was still and the light was soft, it was a gorgeous autumn afternoon.
From the heights of Pujaut hills, views towards Avignon over the alluvial plains of the Rhone river.
A little later as the shadows grow and the plains turn blue, it becomes easier to see on the right the rocky outcrop on which the Popes Palace was built, dominated by its cathedral. The Alpilles ranges is a soft blur in the distance.
The reason behind this photo, besides the graphic shadow lines and the very typical architecture, is the fading lettering above the old man. The large letters read Comptabilité - bureau au 2ème, which translates as 'Accounting, office on the second floor'. but if you look closely (and I've left the photo in heavy format so you can enlarge it if you click on it) there was a smaller lettering over which the large COMPTABILITE word was painted. If I read correctly it says 'Detaxe de lettres de voitures' which means 'waybill tax removal'. I can't think of what taxes this refers to. On the line below are the words 'Comptabilité La Simplex', which is an oxymoron: who would rate accounting as simple?
Just downstream from Daladier bridge on Piot island are plane tree branches hanging over the water's edge. I pushed the contrast to a perfect black and white, turned a copy image to an upside down negative which I pasted below the first, et voila. I believe it could make an good print for a home decoration fabric. What do you think?
Street blocked by two rows of police cars stationed across the whole width of rue Favart (this is a busy bus route, what alternative itinerary did they have to put in place?), this was only one of many displays of police forces in and around the city centre while President Nicolas Sarkozy paid a visit to the Avignon Forum on Culture last Friday. He stayed for a few hours, just enough to deliver a two-hour speech and have lunch with a selected number of guests. Many Culture ministers from G8, G20 and European countries attended. Learn more about the Forum d'Avignon here : I was not particularly impressed by the English version of their website - better translators needed?
A sunny display at the flea market in l'Isle sur Sorgue last Sunday afternoon. On other occasions this blurry photo would have been rejected but in fact it was intentional : this is another of my drive-by experiments (no no I wasn't driving!). The effect is exactly what I was after, somewhat similar to a pastel or watercolour painting with a soft blur. Does it work for you?
Last stretch of the walk back to the village of Gigondas at the end of our hike last Saturday. The gravel road was bathed in afternoon sunlight.

A few more photos of our hike last Saturday. Above, the views from the hilltop village of Gigondas to the vast plains below. The Rhone river flows somewhere beyond.
A beautiful hike last Saturday. The weather was as good as it gets, sunny but not too hot. The rugged peaks you see here are the Dentelles de Montmirail, the large mountain in the background is Mount Ventoux. The hike started and finished in the wine-makers' village of Gigondas and of course a nice bottle of local wine was packed in our backpack for our picnic lunch : French art de vivre at its best!
Some vines were already bare, some others still wore beautiful golden leaves.
Rainy morning last week. I love dipping into a multicoloured bath on my way to work.
I was lucky to visit the workshop of sculptor Daniel Grobet recently, not far from Avignon. You might remember Grobet's work from the posts I did about him here and there. This time I got to see the place where he lives and works.
Foggy sunrise on my way to work earlier this week. We have fog again this morning.

Two little girls in red pose for their mother in front of the Chamber of Commerce.
McDonald's, route de Marseille. Their "McDrive" service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The neon banner advertises a meal + movie package whose price is... unknown. How attractive is that?
In the passenger seat last Sunday night.
Pouring rain, impressionist style. Better open that umbrella fast!
On Halloween night I spotted a weird character hiding around a dark street corner. I'm pretty sure he was spying on someone, but who was he after?
Last Saturday on a walk along the Rhone I met Mr. Goat. For a tasty bunch of flowers he was quite ready to stretch his neck over a rusty fence. Of course I didn't let him wait, he got it all and ate the lot to the very last flower. This post is my participation to the November City Daily Photo theme day : fences. Three views of Marseilles yesterday. What a glorious day it's been.
A typical autumn scene by the river.
Seasonal shot. The weather was bad yesterday.
An unusual view of the famous Pont d'Avignon: my windscreen was scruffy, dusty, filthy but I like this shot just the way it is. shot is my participation to Skywatch Friday: click to see more skies around the world. And to see the Pont d'Avignon under many more angles and lights, click here.
By the water's edge, waiting for a boat passage across the Rhône. In France it is no longer unusual to see a man wearing a pink shirt or sweater. I personally love it. Do men wear pink in your country? Would you?
Red curtains ? There's a theatre below, Les Ateliers d'Amphoux. The large terrace upstairs could almost be a stage. I wouldn't be all that surprised to see an actor appear at the balcony in Commedia dell'arte robe and mask!
Parlez-vous oriental franglais ? I'm not sure what Lounge Orientale food is but I never would have expected hamburgers. This place is located just around the block from a 1500-strong high school (lycée Aubanel) and most patrons are teenagers. World food is on its way.
