Beauduc

The exhibition of works by Peter Lindbergh in the Preaching Brothers Church (église des frères prêcheurs) will be my last post about the Arles Photo Festival - see location map here. This church, which no longer serves for religious purposes, is a beautiful exhibition space. Peter Lindbergh, originally from Germany, studied photography in Berlin before coming to Arles in 1962 in the footsteps of Van Gogh. The series shown here is entirely dedicated to Beauduc, a remote beach in Camargue located at the very tip of the Rhone delta where the locals have used driftwood and various debris to build holiday shacks. Thrilled by this amazing location, Peter Lindbergh did a fashion shooting there. Sounds like a great idea? Yes, except he really played it trash and frankly that doesn't work for me. I don't like these weary-looking black-eyed models staring at you looking bored and disillusioned. Jet set finishing the night with the bad boys is a concept that leaves me cold. I believe there are more interesting ways of moving away from boring blue sky photography than to go down the trash path. What do you think?
But I'm just realizing that my last two posts have been dedicated to exhibits I didn't like. If you want to know what I did enjoy, please turn to the comments section.

Self indulgent

Back to Arles and its annual Photography Festival (Rencontres d'Arles) : the 2008 guest curator is famous fashion designer Christian Lacroix who is originally from Arles himself.
"In responding to the invitation to guest-curate the Rencontres d'Arles, there could be no escaping the temptation to curate my own impressions", said Lacroix. He said he was keen not to create a "fashionista" festival, but the reality is that fashion and clothes remain directly or indirectly at the centre of this year's Rencontres : apart from the "Photographing Clothes" exhibit at Espace Van Gogh that I mentioned yesterday, there's a large selection of Vogue photos and many of this year's guests are fashion photographers. In contrast, last year's event had no guest curator and was world oriented with a focus on India, China and a large selection of Magnum agency photos.
Les Ateliers SNCF (disused railroad workshops) is the Rencontres' largest and most important exhibition space - and guess whose portraits were posted everywhere ? Yes, Christian Lacroix himself. I have little sympathy for self-indulgent narcissism.

Underwear in Arles

Arles, Rencontres photographiques

Located in downtown Arles, Espace Van Gogh is one of the locations used for the Rencontres d'Arles photo exhibitions. Formerly a hospital, this is where Vincent Van Gogh spent some time during his periods of depression. Its courtyard featured in Vincent's famous painting "Hospital Garden in Arles" has retained many of its original features such as the flower garden and yellow arches. This year the Espace Van Gogh hosts "Photographing clothes", an interesting collection of photos of underwear spanning over most of the twentieth century. The photos were generally used in sales catalogs. I like the graphic quality of the top photo and the stressed-out look on the model's face in the bottom one!

Yes, salt

Salin de Giraud, Camargue
Yes, yesterday's white mountains were pure salt, collected in Salin-de-Giraud in the marshlands of Camargue. As the sea evaporates in the basins, the water turns to pink because if its high density in salt. Salins-de-Giraud produces 900 thousand tons of sea salt each year for both the French and export markets. Salins is Europe's major salt company. Salt is not only sold for table use (under famous French brand La Baleine) but also in food processing, animal feeding, agriculture, ice control, water treatment and various applications in the chemical industry - see their website for more info.

Amazing coincidence: I went to the Rencontres Photographiques in Arles yesterday and among the photo exhibits there, one at the Museon Arlaten was about Salins-de-Giraud. The large prints of white salt hills under a deep blue sky looked quite spectacular against the backdrop of the museum's ancient courtyard. The Rencontres d'Arles continue until 21st September 2008; I will certainly tell you more about it in later posts. It's a fascinating event for those interested in photography.

Of love, beer and other things

Throughout the European Union today and tomorrow is Heritage Weekend, an exciting event where all national and local museums, castles and other heritage-listed buildings are open to all, free of charge. The brochure listing the monuments you can visit in Avignon alone is so extensive it is dizzying. I'm sure I'll have some photos of that to show next week.

But this week I was strolling through the streets of Arles, another beautiful city 30kms south of Avignon, passing a shop specialising in fine olive oils (can you see the "Huiles d'olive" sign?) when this really classy couple that caught my eye. I thought they fitted in the street perfectly!

And here's another young couple I caught yesterday evening in Avignon: these two were sitting on an old stone wall in the Jardin des Doms, the public garden overlooking the Popes' Palace. Drinking a beer and chatting, they were watching the sun set over the old town, a sea of pink roofs spreading below them. She was smoking hand-rolled cigarettes (see the very thin roll between her fingers?). I don't think these two are lovers, they are seated too far apart. Students just getting to know each other at the beginning of the year?

Drinking beer at sunset... suddenly this reminded me of this photo I took in Sydney a couple of months ago and never had a chance to post. I thought this boat at sunset would look nice but just as I pressed the shutter I noticed the people on board started moving - I first thought it would ruin the shot - quite the contrary! When I opened the photo on my computer I realised I had caught a crew member passing on a beer to the captain, which added a wonderful zilch to the shot!

I'll add a flock of birds taken on the same day over lake Tuggerah, north of Sydney. I quite enjoy the idea of occasionally crossing over from France to Australia, bridging the gap from here to there. I have a few left-over shots that I think are worth showing. But for bird and wildlife shots of Provence, you'll have to wait. I don't have a car yet so haven't had a chance to go in the country much.

So back to love and the city (not Sex and the city) I'll leave you with this wonderful letter box I found in one of Avignon's back streets. Under the engraved words 'boîte aux lettres' (box for letters, in litteral translation) someone wrote "d'amour" (of love) in red chalk. A letterbox only dedicated to love letters, isn't that delightfully French? That reconciles me with graffiti, which are a real pest in Avignon!
(This last photo is posted as an addendum, I had trouble uploading it yesterday).
Have a good week everyone and may love be all around you.
