Theme day: Under construction

Boulevard Saint Michel, AvignonEach first day of the month is theme day for all members of the City Daily Photo blogging network and our theme for June is Under construction. Very few new buildings ever appear in Avignon's historic city centre: in this tightly controlled environment, renovation is the name of the game. The ramparts encompassing the old town are just one example : the crumbling stones eaten by erosion are in constant need of care. The other day I watched a team of stone-masons at work : each stone was cut to shape at the bottom of the wall then lifted with a crane and carefully set into place. I went over and had a chat to the stone-mason you see here: his name is Sebastien. He said that these were his last few days of work in France: in a couple of weeks' time he would fly to California and start a whole new life with his American girlfriend.
Would he look for work as a stone-mason, I asked?
- Not necessarily, I'll be open to all opportunities, he said with a broad smile.
He was pleased to receive a copy of my photos. Good luck to you in your new life Sebastien !

Poof! There goes my internal image of stone-masons working with chisels!

I wonder how long he will stay in America, where the unemployment rate is very high. May not so high for French stone-masons, perhaps.

Good series of shots for the Theme Day, Nathalie. Shall copy your text, if I may, to further my language learning.

I hope he is still smiling when he gets to California and can find work. A big step I would think, but Peter might be right, the girlfriend may make the difference! :)

Nice shots of Sebastien. I really like how you can just make out his eyes through the fence. I bet he wondered why you were were taking photos of him at a construction site! That's great you had a chance to chat with him.

Such a sympathetic series of photos and commentary. I'm sure he'll do well in America - he has a real trade, after all. Good luck to them both.
