Clay make up

Place du palais des papes, AvignonThe Avignon theatre festival is over but street performances aimed at visiting tourists continue around Popes palace square. I enjoyed watching this guy working on his clay make up in a corner of the square.

After a short while (hardly 45 seconds) he grew really annoyed with my photos and pulled a face at me. Sorry for being a nuisance sir, and thanks to you, you made my day ! (I obviously wouldn't have been so insistent with anyone else but I believe that for a street performer, being photographed is part of the job, don't you ?).

Of course. I would probably have given the poor guy a very hard time. But I'm sure he secretly enjoyed the attention you gave him.

Yah! that's what I call grumpy! I mean you chose him to photograph. that clay looks really heavy - imagine having to wash it off at the end of the day.

Interesting, unusual and a bit dismal all at the same time Dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return.

Being photographed is indeed part of the the job for a street performer. Perhaps he was scowling at you because he wanted you to throw money into his bucket.

Nothing beats the skill at getting bystanders to drop money in the bucket of street performers than the performers at Venice Beach on Los Angeles. There are lots of them, and they are really talented. A guy covered in clay would not attract much attention, unless he were juggling chain saws.

Tu as entièrement raison, pas sympa l'homme d'argile !

The expression on his face is parfait! You can feel the intensity of the look in his eyes!

Great shot!

Oh! Oui,

Bonjour! Nathalie, for some unknown reason he reminds me of a French soldier...during either(W)orld war I or II...

Hmmmm...I've come up against this too, Nathalie. In fact I get people demanding money from me before they allow me to take a photo. The guy with the street organ and dog or cat on top is a case in point. You are right - he's there in the street and should be happy for you to take his photo. I reckon he got out of bed the wrong side that morning.

The fact that he's shown miserably brown clay perhaps speaks of his personality. Now if he were silver or gold, he's be bright and cheerful and happy!
