A delayed blog anniversary

Rue Bonnetterie
To go from despair to hope and be saved from drowning, that's my wish for today! I was about to celebrate this blog's third birthday (see below) when my ISP let me down on Monday. I have been without a phone or internet connection ever since and the best they can do for me is promise me that a technician will come next Tuesday - that's another four days away! Eight days without action, how's that for efficiency? Thanks Numericable, I am pleased to promote your great service here.

AVIGNON IN PHOTOS celebrated its third birthday on August 23rd. In August 2007, just returning from a six year stay in Australia, I started this blog as a continuation of my previous one, Sydney Daily Snap. Check out my first Avignon post dated 25th August 2007 (some of you might remember it?). I am grateful to the many of you who inspired me over the years with their kind, humorous or insightful comments. I'm not sure what the future holds for this blog but those three years of continuous posting never would have been achieved without you, my faithful readers of which several have become dear friends. Thank you!

Merci !
At Amaraentus' request I am adding an extra photo in order to celebrate this anniversary properly!

I am writing this from a friend's place where I am setting up camp for the next few days. My job is web-based so for me no internet connection is a disaster. My ISP doesn't seem to care much though...

Nathalie, Avignon is one of my favorite cities in France and I was fortunate to be there during the summer festival several years ago. I love reading your blog in English (and French) while I enjoy your photos and stories.

Keep it coming! Your portraits give insight to the individuals like the guy applying the heavy clay for his performance mask.

Merci!

claude said...

Bisous Nathalie !

I have some good French builder stories also.
Still love em though.

Beautiful photos for today - as always - and hope for many more wonders from your camera and your fascinating mind in future.

Sorry to hear about your internet problems. Been there done that with France Telecom! Just hope it gets solved soon.

Congratulation! on your third year anniversary.

Nathalie said,"Eight days without action, how's that for efficiency? Thanks Numericable, I am pleased to promote your great service here."

Nathalie, your sarcasm is dutifully noted...On a personal note I had cable interruption for close to 9-12 days...Therefore, I have complete empathy with you when it comes to cable service.

Oh! No, I don't remember your first post...because I started to follow your blog shortly, after you were honoured as a Blog of Note.

Merci, for sharing the links and your photographs are always beautiful to behold.

I especially, like the serenity in the third photograph which is now your header.

I agree Virginia I love the two photos here that Nathalie posted. HOwever I think they made reference to the breakdown of her computer so I requested a celebration photo for her anniversary.
I adooooooooooooooooooore those 2 photos that Nathalie posted and I don't think that she is apologizing for them but Nathalie will speak for herself.

Yes the photo in blue is amazing.-a water birth.

no I don't think that Nathalie is apologizing at all for the photos she is just shifting her attention from the breakdown of the computer to the celebration of the anniversary per se.

Congratulations on the third anniversary of your blog. You have kept it going so well to the delight of all who look at it. It's such a pity that there was a hiccup to your internet access just at this time. That's so typical. Keep up the good work. :-)

nathalie in avignon said...

Ravie, j'attends... j'attends... j'attends.

Hello !!!

Hi

Next time you lose your numericable television connection try the following.

1. Unplug the cable box (decodeur) from the wall socket.

2. Wait 30 seconds, not less and plug it back in.

3. Next (after the "decodeur" resets itself)set it on TF1 and wait 30 minutes. Not less. Leave the television on for that time.

It should come back.

I had a problem with my movie channels the other day when the V.O was not working on English language movies. Only French language was available. By doing the above I restored the V.O language problem.

Every time I have a problem with "Null"mericable this is what I do and the box resets itself.

"Null"mericable is absolutely worthless but the only reason I keep them is for ESPN America sports package. You know baseball football (American) and all that guy stuff.

Their hardware has major problems with the software compatibility but don't expect the technical service to help you. They are all ABSOLUTELY F**KING worthless.

Also if your box is analogue(older boxes) you need to change it and get a new digital box. It is more reliable than the older analogue boxes.

I once set up an appointment for a Japanese client of mine and two times in a row the technician while the client waited at home didn't come for the appointment. The third time I called the technician and he told me he was busy and couldn't see them that day. I asked him if he had a cell phone and he asked "Yes Why"? (Duh Hello) I told him he could have called the client to inform them that he couldn't make the appointment.

Oh. "I didn't think of that" he told me.

French service still not up to par and still as arrogant as ever.

Hello !!!"

But you know that is systematically going to happen in France.

Petrea Burchard said...

Frankly, it sounds just like the cable service in Pasadena, California.

nathalie in avignon said...

Rocket (Richard), I did try the unplug-wait for 2 minutes-replug thing several times over those several days, it didn't work. The black-out affected the whole street. The only thing is, of the 4 people in my street that use numericable, no-one else complained so the staff in the shop wouldn't believe that it was a global problem.

But I still don't understand why the tech staff and commercial people don't talk to each other.

I find it interesting to read Petrea's comment above. Despite claims to high efficiency standards, America sometimes just doesn't deliver either...

Richard said...

"The only thing is, of the 4 people in my street that use numericable, no-one else complained so the staff in the shop wouldn't believe that it was a global problem."

This very common. I find most people in France just wait for the problem to resolve itself and don't complain. Especially with problems in "coproprieté" for example. Usually they wait until "la moutarde leur monte au nez" and then they they go ballistic rather than dealing with the problem immediately.

We had a problem with the interphone in our apt building here in Paris last year. I went to the responsible of the copropriété to inform her and her first response was the typical. "It's only your interphone. "No one else has said anything". Well I saw everyone on my floor and did the test with each one of them and not one of their interphones worked. And even after that no one still signaled it out except me. Turns out that it was the whole system that was shot but it took them a year to fix it which meant a total new installation of the interphone system.

You just have to be patient and wade through the denial.

I've been in France for 33 years so I've got them read like a book that's why my business is primarily oriented toward the Japanese. (no conflict and no engueulades and they pay without excuses)It's a who needs the headache kinda thing.

I can't tell you how many times people have told me the same thing. "No one else has said anything" so the problem doesn't exist. For us Americans it's normal to deal with a problem immediately. For the French its thought of as ill bred.

They call it "La pensée unique"

It's a denial kinda thing.

Used to back in the days when I was more into the society (many moons ago) but have since stepped back so I am able to avoid frustration. I try to depend on French service as little as possible.

As far as service in the US is concerned, yes there is irresponsibility but you can always get the name of the person and take it one step higher.

Had a very bad experience with my bank once in the US when they did exactly the opposite of what I told them to do even after we had run though my orders on the phone twice and they still screwed up. However I was able to clear up the problem in a matter of days without having to listen to them tell me it was my fault.

Avignon's a nice place. I work in Aix once or twice a month and sometimes stop in Avignon. I enjoy the visit but I couldn't live in the south of France.

Petrea Burchard said...

Especially cable TV companies here, Nathalie! At least in my experience.

Nathalie H.D. said...

Richard, sorry I didn't answer your first question - I had a look at your video and I don't think it's relevant to use my photo of the bridge in it. I think the whole product should keep its homogeneity - I assume all the other photos are yours?

Alternatively I suggest you take more pics when you next come down here next. That could be a fun project!
