Theme Day: Shadow and Highlight

It's been ages since I last participated in a City Daily Photo theme day and it's a thrill. The theme chosen by my blogging friend Bob in Saint Louis Daily Photo, is Shadow and Highlight. Rather than serve you another helping of my vineyard shots, my monomaniac theme at the moment, I dug out these two photos from my archives. The top one dates back to a holiday at the French island of La Reunion in the Indian Ocean several years ago and the bottom one, which probably better fits Bob's bill, is of one of my nieces at a family Christmas dinner. Which image do you prefer?
Now do yourself a favour, go check the CDP website for more takes on the theme!

In this case, the second one is my preferred favourite. Both are outstanding!

Both photos fit the theme very well, but the photo of your niece is IT!!

There seems to be a trend going. The silhouette in the top photo works well and the pointed hat pulls the viewer in. But the second one - the way the light falls on her, the black background, the graceful position of her hands - il est quelque chose de spécial.

Pour St-Gilles, les couleurs me manquent !
Alors je préfère celle du balcon.

Interesting to see that I seem to have a balanced mix in your preferences between the first and second photo. I have to say they're very different.

I love both photographs!

I love your second image, Nathalie, both because it fits the theme so well and because your niece is a beauty.

I love the first one. Sitting in front of the enormous ocean. Very calm picture!

@Murcia DP - yes it's the ocean but there's a barrier reef and a lagoon so the water is very quiet around this part of the island.
