Quoi de neuf ?

Quoi de neuf means 'What's up". Bugs Bunny's favorite sentence 'What's up, doc?' becomes 'Quoi de neuf, docteur ?' in French. But nothing to do with Bugs Bunny, this is the name of a contemporary art exhibition currently on at Hotel Cloitre St Louis. This beautiful ancient cloister is worth a visit in its own right but the exhibit is nice too. I've selected a few pieces for you. This dish of tagliatelle for example - look closely at the fork, it continues as pasta. It's titled "Usage unique" by Suzy Lelièvre. Is this art? It's an old debate but what a fun idea.

By Armelle Caron, "forever", black sticker affixed directly onto wall. The girl here appears forever attached to her cup of tea or coffee, as if it were an oxygen mask. A message about our daily addictions?
avignon photos

This is actually a video so my photo doesn't do justice to it. Think of a girl standing in front of you, eyes blinking from time to time, looking very much alive, wearing a light fixture as some sort of a crown. Then the light fixture starts swinging left and right, slowly at first then in a more ample motion. Tearing off from the body, the head follows, attached to the light fixture. The effect is quite hypnotic. As time goes by, the swinging motion slowly decreases and the head finally returns to its inital position. Weird and fascinating. "Suspended luxuriance 1", video by Minori Matsuoka (born 1977), duration 5.5 minutes.

Do you feel like commenting any of these works?

...well, the spaghetti is certainly good fun, and the photo is nice...so that's OK then! I like it.

Quoi de neuf, Nathalie? I wonder what the origin of that expression was. Anyway, I like it! The "suspended luxuriance 1" exhibit sounds fascinating. You have the most interesting posts.
What an interesting concept and a terrific description BTW. I'd like to see the cloister when we get to Avignon.

I like them all, but especially the first one with those reflections of light.

Lacking any kind of artistic talent, I am always asking: "how did they think of that?"...And if it makes you pause and wonder (and amuses you to boot), then it's art in my book ;-)

Salut,

All these either make me laugh or make me think - that's good, in my book. I'm all for being stimulated, get the ol' brain cells working. Actually I find all these exhibits beautiful is some way too - perhaps because it's obvious an artist has taken care in their creation.

I particularly like 1 and 2 - the lady who loses her head: I find that rather disturbing. Is that good or bad? I don't know.

Lovely photographs, Nathalie. I like your commentary very much too.

If the whole exhibition was like this, of this quality, it must have been a fascinating visit! A lot of nice imagination! Your photo and your description made me see the video...!

Yes, it's definitely art, as far as I'm concerned. It's great to see new stuff, new ideas, multi-media mixed with non-moving stuff, rather than just the same tired "modern" art pieces all the time. Thanks for bringing us these pics. In the Bay Area it's very, very hard to photograph exhibits in most museums.
