Female anatomy

Musée CalvetFemale anatomy in painting often calls for close scrutiny.

Have you noticed her heart-shaped belly?

claude said...

you'd never be allowed to take photos in a UK gallery!

Hyde DP, Ça me tue ça !

And I love how this sweet gentleman is so intent on the information below and not fixated on the hmmmm ...obvious!!

LOL, that is priceless!

Hyde DP, Michel Benoit asked me to translate his irritation with your comment about such a photo not being allowed in the UK. Whatever is in a museum is the property of all citizens and therefore they should be allow to take pictures without restriction. It's hard enough to think that we have to pay to see what is ours !!! (with no right to touch!)

Michel goes on to add that he often takes illegal pictures whenever he can, just to make a point.

Nathalie: re the comment by Hyde DP and Michel's response. As you would know, the same restriction applies in every Australian museum of which I am aware. I am not convinced that "we the people" own the items in a museum. If they have been purchased by a state owned entity, this argument may be stronger. However, a film showing at a cinema has the same problem. It is the creative effort of another and we pay for the opportunity to have a look, not to take an image away with us.

Having said this, I too take every opportunity I can to take "illegal" photographs - but know each and every occasion on which this occurs by the feeling of guilt. Inevitably, some officious little twerp comes and tells me off!

Take the obvious problem with Musee Calvet: the building is as much a work of art as the contents. Same with AG-NSW: the building has its own charms yet we are free to photograph that but not the works on art on the walls inside.

Oops ... not meant to be dissertation length!

Thanks everyone for your fun comments. I have to tell you that what the visitors were looking at was the small sign under the painting giving its title and author.

I got ticked off in the Museum of Sydney the other day for taking a photo. I asked "why?", that most interesting of questions, and the guy couldn;t actually tell me "Ours is not to wonder why", he said "It's just the rule." So then we engaged on the topic of whu why, therefore, is the most important question.

Usually, unless you have something else to say, as you have here, it's pointless taking pics, because nothing you take with a handheld is going to compromise whatever copyright a gallery has on a work - it just won't be as good as the reproduction postcard you can buy in the gallery shop.

What you may compromise is sales at their shop.

BTW I am not so sure that photography is banned inside the Art Gallery of NSW; I've certainly taken pics in there (and posted them on my blog!) ....but maybe I haven't noticed and have plugged on regardless.

A-ha! The answer - from the AGNSW website:

May I take photographs in the Art Gallery?
Photography of temporary exhibitions, Aboriginal art or Photography is not permitted.

Photography of the permanent collection is permitted only without a flash, and without a tripod, for the purpose of private study only.

Photographic material for publication or other commercial purposes is available upon written request to the Image Reproduction department.
