A bit of French History

Going back a few days, a photo that I thought would be of interest: it was taken on May 1st, Labour day, when students demonstrated alongside all major unions against job cuts in public education. When this young girl saw me taking pictures she conveniently turned the sign towards me with a big smile. It reads Sarko began like Louis the fourteenth and will finish like Louis the sixteenth.
Are you familiar with French kings ? Sarko is our president's nickname - Nicolas Sarkozy. Louis XIV is remembered for having built the castle of Versaillles and living in grand splendour whilst his people ran hungry. Louis XVI is the one who was guillotined after the French revolution. Sarkozy was elected just a year ago and he's the most unpopular president we've ever had after a year in office.
There is a spelling mistake in the sign : "Sarko a commencer" should read "a commencé" . Same sound, different grammatical use, it's a common mistake, just like its and it's in English. Anyway, someone corrected it with a thin red pen and wrote 0/20 in the top right corner! Is the bad mark for the student or the president?
Now can you spot in this photo the telltale detail that proves it was taken on May 1st? (click to enlarge it)

As a bonus photo, Sarko as Napoleon. This one appeared during the local elections last February and was produced by Sarkostique, http://www.sarkostique.over-blog.com/, self proclaimed "official Nicolas Sarkozy satirical blog" (word play on sarcastic of course).

Thanks for all the historical detail on this - very interesting. Eric's blog educated me about the detail, but since I'm first to comment, I won't say what it is. ;^)

I know enough French and French history that I got the message, although I would never have noticed the grammatical error. My wife and I consider ourselves part of the Language Police when it comes to English usage.

Do many French people have similar feelings about Sarkozy? The news we get here suggests that his term has been difficult so far but I don't know about general public opinion about him.

I'm doing a Mexican theme on by blog this week.

I hope the demonstrators have put more care into researching their position than they have in their grammar!

There is a lot of wonderful irony in that shot!

A superb photo!

And, Aha! I spied them, although here in the states, I don't receive them, so I have to content myself with the ones growing in my garden...

I was in Paris in March, and I heard much about Sarkozy. I was surprised to find his ratings had plunged so quickly.

I hope he keeps his head, at least.

Nathalie, I have answered your question about the Moose...come see me!

j'me souviens surtout d'ces moutons,

They're both realy interesting photos. Piero says that if the mark is 0/20 for the student's grammar, then the teacher is a VERY harsh marker!

Love the humour of the sarkostique poster.

There was a big demo outside the NSW Labor Party conference here as they held their conference - traditional May Day. They want to orivatise electricity and the conf delegates voted against it 700-100, so now the state govt is dettermined to defy party policy.

M.Benaut said...

Maybe this image of him was taken "dans les miroirs déformants de Luna Park" de Sydney.
Maybe he has, "très courtes jambes suivies de pieds immeeeenses" too.

Send him over here for a spell, we make bolognaise sauce very well.

We have an Aussie expression;- "When the **** hits the fan".

I love both photos (le muguet-indice!), politcal satires, and puns like "sarcostique".

Love your commentary as well as explaining the nuances of the imagery!

Thanks for explaining. I had little idea your president was on such and equal footing with ours in the popularity contest. How do we manage to put these men in office in the first place???

Can't spot the foolproof proof it was done on the first, but do know you used a Canon G7 -:)

The telltale sign was the old lady holding a little sprig of lily-of-the-valley in her hand.
Lily of the valley is traditionally sold everywhere in the streets on the first of May and offered to relatives for good luck.

Nicolas Sarkozy was elected on the promise of bringing a new spirit to the presidency: dynamic, energetic and initiating pragmatic change in French society sometimes tragically stuck in its old ways. The result would be a successful new society.

One year on, his managerial style fails to impress, the results are slow to appear, the economy is not doing all that well and the country's morale is at an all time low.
His view is that things will improve once the reforms he's implementing start producing effects. He's got another four years to go.
