The red coat

Place du Change
When I crossed paths with this family what striked me was the smile on the young mother's face. She looked profoundly happy. I turned around just to bathe in that happiness a tiny while longer... and that's when I spotted the red coat.
With two children this could be the standard French family. The latest statistics show that the French fertility rate has constantly risen in the past few years to reach 2.1 childen per woman in 2007, making it the highest in Europe - before Ireland, long standing title holder, whose fertility rate dropped below 2.0 in 2006.

Nathalie, This photo is so very lovely. The light, the figures, the pattern in the street, the child. The red coat puts me in rememberance of the "Shindler's List" film. But, this child is marked for happiness. Very lovely,

Like Kim, Louis thought of the little girl in the red coat in "Shindler's List". What a striking, hauntingly lovely photo!

I saw Shindler's List, but sadly don't remember the scene. I was reading just today, though, that unlike France, the Italians are experiencing a steadily dropping birth rate and have established a new government office to try to deal with the looming imbalance.

Striking photo, by the way!

Really lovely scene of concentrated gentle familly harmony. It is the same in my country (Czech)- the birth rate rised up (strong age group of parents - I have two children), but will soon fall dawn again. Have a nice weekend. K.

Like Kim and Louis, "Shindler's list" immediately came to my mind when I saw this picture... But obviously, the feeling is not the same...

Goes without saying again, but Schindler's list. The imagery is so startling in this image, and it sits perfetly with the textual aspect of the post.

Tu as vraiment un beau coup d'oeil.

Concerning the French fecondity rate,I wonder what it would be..

without the social aid received by every family expecting a child,

and the Pre and postbirth leave of absence authorized to the pregnant working women.I have seen in the USA women taking just 2 or 3 days before their due date, and not 3 months like in France..

Marie-Noyale you are right, it seems that this high birth rate can be attributed to government aids and other favourable conditions such as pre and post maternity leave.

Kim and others, I'm amazed that I hadn't thought of Schindler's list, it seems indeed obvious now.

beautiful shot. Love the red coat, the shadows, the light. And interesting stats too. I didn't think of Schindler's List either and should have done.

So, N....you've been "shopping" which surprises me. But, in this case I have to congratulate you for a super job (even Richard couldn't complain at this one).

So glad you liked the cattle shots (Daily P really helps you to look and learn, doesn't it). even better...you've also "ascended".

I must be on the same wavelength as Jilly as she wrote almost word for word what I was thinking. So, Nathalie - ditto to Jilly's comment.

Really lovely, although I would have liked to have seen what profoundly happy looks like ;)

This is a beautiful photo. I hope the family gets to see it.
