Autumn colours

Villeneuve lez Avignon
Don't think the shutters' colour is here by chance. It is very traditional in the region. Most houses here have shutters and many of them come in this soft grey-green colour - the reference for finding the right shade of green is the foliage of olive trees (see below). Finding the right colour can be tricky but the owners here did a pretty good job in finding a tasteful match to nature.

Speaking of which, olives will soon be ready to be picked.

Indeed - this colour and also the washed blue. But there is a smattering of modern olive-limes and almost-terracotta. They are a photographer's heaven. aren't they. I also liked the world-weary pealing look, of which there are many. Must say though, that I was unimpressed by Villeneuve les Avignon. Maybe I saw the wrong section. The view across to Avignon was pretty good - except for the haze!

Lovely accent how that Boston Ivy/Virginia Creeper's lovely red leaves play with the shutters. Can't imagine how delicious the olives must be from the tree. Do you eat them that way? Alas, mine come from a jar, I cannot imagine.

Beautiful combination. Olives don't grow well around here, but they are tasty in a variety of dishes.

Julie, you definitely saw the wrong part of Villleneuve les Avignon, it's one of the most delightful villages I can think of.

Yes, blue is another colour often seen in shutters in Provence but in villages closer to the sea. It's an age-old tradition for fishermen to paint their shutters with the same paint they use for their boats and for some reason blue was the main colour used. But we're far from the sea here and blue is rare.

Virginia, olives need a long and complicated treatment before your can eat them. You can't eat them straight from the tree. I have a friend who has an olive grove. I hope to go and visit him soon and do a report on the wole process.

The beauty of that window, those shutters, those leaves - they take my breath away. So very pleasing. But you always have such a good eye! Lovely, lovely image.

I'm so glad you found your way over to synch-ro-ni-zing again! :)

I can honestly say as a tourist and photographer there is nothing in this area that ever disappoints when I 've been. It's flat out beautiful.

Beautiful, as always. I'm fascinated by the different colours of volets and also the many different types - so often pertaining to a particular region. I didn't know shutters were traditionally painted the same colour as the boat. That's v interesting. Here the main colour is more turquoise. In St. Tropez I believe it's a blue - more a Picasso blue. All lovely and yours is delighted with the vigne vierge.
