Downstream sailing

Rhône river, just upstream of Avignon
Along the river Rhone, mid-afternoon. There are quite a few sailboats and pleasure craft like these cruising down the Rhone in autumn. Many come from the UK, Belgium or the Netherlands to spend the winter in the Mediterranean, a nice option for those who prefer milder climates. France has an extensive network of canals which you can use to sail down from the Channel or the North Sea all the way south to the Mediterranean. The quiet and relaxed conditions of canal cruising are a nice alternative to experiencing the hardships of a tough offshore passage.
Talking about wintering, please note that Avignon in Photos is also going into winter mode and switching from daily to thrice weekly. Unfortunately I need more time for work. How un-cool!

Youpi.

This looks just so pleasant. My wife and I really want to take a barge trip in France some day. We did it once some years ago along the River Ouze in East Anglia and it was delightful, except that the beds on the barge weren't nearly as long as I am. We worked it out. Your lovely picture makes me want to do it again.

Beauty of a photo - so much tranquility with the calm water, the yellow leaves, and the slow moving boats. Wish you a very productive winter.

Even with thrice a week, I trust you will remain a cool blogger!

I know some Brits who have done this and it must be great, if a little time consuming!
Enjoy your semi-hibernation anyway!

My idea of relaxing along any french river. It's so peaceful.

Thank you for your response to me on Peter's blog about the tall sailing ship. Now that I've discovered your blog, I will visit often. Lovely and interesting photos along with lively text.
I am going to Paris next month but my original plan was to go to Provence and Nice with a tour group and and then head to Parison my own but the first part was cancelled and I'm just going to Paris earlier.
Next year if the economy here doesn't crash much further, I will try to rebook the Provence trip.
I was in the Southwest of France Summer of 2007 and fell in love with the area. What a beautiful country you live in.

How lovely this is. I love the absolute clarity of the leaves and that romantic background. Everyone I know who has taken a boat of the Canal du Midi (I'm presuming this is part of the Canal du Midi?) has just loved it, raved about, adored it. We should do it one day, Nathalie!

I shall be looking out for you, even if you don't post daily. Three times a week from Nathalie is three times inspiration.

Winter is nice if you like it and hopeless, almost, if you don't. Have a good respite.

It looks really, really cold. Grrr, I understand about work. If only those spam emails about all the riches coming my way if only I provide my bank account details were true....
