Male or female? / Homme ou femme ?

I love street art. I found this piece last weekend in one of the little streets of l'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, some 20 km east of Avignon. My sisters and I couldn't really figure if this torso was male or female. What do you reckon?

The grape harvest roundabout

Two giant stone hands holding bunches of grapes mark the roundabout near the Beaumes-de-Venise wine coop: quite a landmark, you can't miss it. But on a foggy day it can be an eerie sight. Will you spot the little chapel of Notre Dame d'Aubune just further up the hill?

Portraits at the flea market

Practicing street photography at the flea market in Carpentras, holding my camera at waist level. I can't resist showing these beautiful characters.

Sunday flea market in Carpentras

Sunday flea market in Carpentras. We were there last Sunday at 9.30, expecting the market to be in full swing and thinking we'd missed the best opportunities which, as everyone knows, can be had at 6.00 am at the back of the truck, but we were wrong: merchants were just starting to set up. How come so late, we asked one of them? He explained that this particular market, unlike most others, requires merchants to be there at 6.00 for placement but forbids them to unload their trucks before 9.30 (10.00 am in winter), and the rule is strictly enforced. He wasn't sure why; perhaps in order to avoid noise disturbances to the neighbourhood? Anyway by walking slowly we saw the stalls fill up. We bought a few books and had a good time. Went home for lunch with the first strawberries of the season.
Flea market in Carpentras ; every Sunday 10 am - 6 pm

Gray day

It rained all day yesterday and the sky looks just as grim today. You can't show the pretty sights of Provence only, can you? This spuming factory and its roundabout are located in the countryside near a village whose name I think is very pretty : Sainte-Cecile-les-Vignes, not very far from home. On a bright day and looking the other way, I could have taken a brilliant photo of the vineyards with the rugged peaks of the Dentelles in the distance.

The Asian elephant

This bronze elephant was at my parents' place - now it sits at mine. My mother inherited it from her aunt Madeleine who never married but for many years was the mistress of a wealthy man who set her up in a mansion in Brittany. Being in the Navy, he was away for many months each year but when he came home to her he'd bring back exotic presents, especially artifacts or antiques from Asia. I only met this Aunt Madeleine once or twice when I was little but she was a bright, highly educated and fiercely independent woman who loved to paint and write. Are there many items in your home that have a story?

August at the Beach

Today is my youngest daughter's birthday - her 23rd. I believe it's the first time we won't be celebrating together. I'll miss her. She's away, studying in Canada for six months. She's spending the weekend in the Laurentides but here I chose to remember her last summer walking atop the gigantic dune du Pilat on the French Atlantic coast - a spectacular place. If you ever get a chance to visit, don't miss it.

Poles

We're just outside the ramparts of Avignon. The signs on the left show directions to the Pont d'Avignon and the cruise ships (bateaux promenade). Not your usual tourist photo - what strikes you about it?
This post is linked to Skywatch Friday, a community of bloggers who look up to the sky every Friday. Check it out for more skies around the world!

Music to my ears

This sweet little fife player was in my mother's garden (above), now he sits in mine (below).
It's one of the last things my mother bought. She'd been looking for one for a long while and when she finally found one on a market in the south of France in July 2014, she negotiated the price (the hands were broken), brought him home in her boot, glued the hands back into place and treated him to a place of choice on a wall in her garden. She was already very ill with pancreas cancer then and she died six months later but in that short time the little guy gave her much joy. Now he gives joy to me.

Marseilles by bike

Seaside back in September. Those who've been to the Vieux Port in Marseilles will know how I took this photo.

Emerging from the fog

I'd never photographed Notre Dame d'Aubune from that angle before. It involves climbing up a fairly steep rock face and making your way through fairly thick bushes at times. But on that foggy morning I was so determined to catch the chapel emerging from it that I thought nothing of it. I had to wait a long while though - the blue sky was visible above but underneath, the fog just wouldn't clear.

Sunrise on the Tribunal

Early morning on Avignon's court house. We're just across from the fabulous sculpture representing The Difficult Balance Of Justice.
