Le jardin de Jane à Barbentane

If you're a garden lover and happen to be in Provence in May, make sure you pay a visit to Jane's garden in Barbentane, some 10 kilometres south of Avignon. Jane, or Janette as her friends call her, just turned 80 but still spends four to five hours a day tending to her garden, a photographer's delight housing an amazing collection of roses, irises and peonies as well as cactuses. The garden is open to the public every day in May after 4 pm or at other times by appointment for group visits. Entry is 5 euros. If you go for a guided tour be prepared for a two-hour exercise where Janette, an endearing and talkative character, will give you the names of all the species you'll see as well as many tips on organic gardening :  her garden is a pesticide-free bird and nature sanctuary. The visit I followed last Saturday was in French but perhaps you could get it in English : while Janette was born and raised in Barbentane to a long line of local farmers, she also had a fascinating life which took her for a number of years to the United States where she cooked for celebrities  in New York City and Los Angeles before returning to her village. An inquisitive mind, not only is she a talented gardener and organic farming activist with contacts all over Europe, she's also passionate about many other things such as local history and traditions.

Si vous aimez les beaux jardins et êtes en Provence en mai alors ne ratez pas le jardin de Jane à Barbentane, à environ 10 kilomètres au sud d'Avignon. Jane, ou Janette comme l'appellent ses amis, vient d'avoir 80 ans mais passe encore 4 à 5 heures par jour à s'occuper de son jardin, une merveille qui compte une impressionnante collection de rosiers, d'iris, de pivoines et aussi de cactées. Le jardin est ouvert aux visiteurs tous les jours du mois de mai après 16h ou à d'autres heures sur réservation pour les groupes. L'entrée coûte 5 euros. Si vous prenez une visite guidée comme celle que j'ai suivie samedi dernier, préparez-vous à une aventure de deux heures où Janette vous donnera  les noms des différentes variétés que vous verrez ainsi que de nombreux conseils de jardinage sans pesticides (pensez à emporter un petit carnet pour prendre des notes !) : son jardin est un sanctuaire de protection de la nature agréé par la L.P.O.  Lien vers une petite biographie de Janette ici. Merci Janette, vous êtes un modèle et une inspiration, je suis heureuse de vous avoir rencontrée.

Nos olivades

Friday 16th November was the day we selected for picking the olives in the grove below the house. A friend came over to help and the three of us spent the day picking either by hand or by raking the branches with small plastic rakes to make the olives fall in the net spread below. While the day was overcast and a bit cold in the morning, we finished the day in short sleeves under a bright sun, an unexpected treat in November! Total yield : 77.5 kilos - this is far less than these trees can give in better years but for my first time I was already quite happy with the result.

Nous avons consacré le vendredi 16 novembre à la cueillette des olives dans le champ en contrebas de la maison. Un ami est venu nous aider et à trois nous avons cueilli toute la journée, soit à la main soit en ratissant les branches à l'aide d'un petit râteau pour faire tomber les olives dans le filet étalé sous l'arbre. Il faisait gris et un peu froid le matin mais nous avons fini la journée en manches courtes sous un grand soleil, un bonheur inespéré en novembre ! Poids total de la récolte : 77,5 kilos. C'est beaucoup moins que ce que ces arbres peuvent donner certaines années mais pour ma première olivade j'étais déjà ravie du résultat.

Feu mourant

Dans ma nouvelle maison on se chauffe surtout au bois. L'après-midi quand le soleil vient réchauffer la maison et caresser l'âtre, on laisse le feu s'épuiser doucement ; on le ranime en fin de journée quand le froid revient.

In the house where I now live, wood burning is the main heating source. When the sun warms up the house and comes licking the fireplace in the afternoon, we let the fire exhaust itself slowly ; we bring it back to life when the evening comes and the cold takes hold again.
