Sketching at Coté Parc

Last Wednesday I had the joy of meeting up with my friends of the Sketchcrawl Avignon group to have a go at sketching around L'isle sur la Sorgue, a little town famous for its many antique shops and fantastic Sunday market. The weather being quite cold we took shelter at Coté Parc, a treasure trove of antiques and vintage home decoration items, where the owners kindly let us sit and sketch to our heart's content. The place was so inspiring we worked there all morning and came back for more in the afternoon. On the recommendation of the shop owner we had lunch at Au Chineur. 
All in all the five of us had a great time. I was less than satisfied with my own work, which showed how long it'd been since I last held a pen, but I was amazed by my friend Liliane's talent. Will you recognize in her beautiful sketches below some of the scenes I'm showing here? 

Mercredi dernier j'ai retrouvé mes amis du groupe SketchCrawl d'Avignon pour une rando-croquis autour de l'Isle sur la Sorgue, petite ville célèbre pour ses nombreux antiquaires et son marché du dimanche. Comme il faisait froid nous nous sommes réfugiés dans la boutique Côté Parc, véritable caverne d'Ali Baba qui allie pièces anciennes, rééditions et objets de décoration patinés. Très bien accueillis par Nelly, la propriétaire (merci à elle !) nous y avons passé la matinée et y sommes même retournés après le déjeuner (que nous avons pris, sur la recommandation de Nelly, Au Chineur) tant le lieu était stimulant. Ce fut une belle journée d'amitié et de plaisir de dessiner. Malheureusement j'ai été déçue par mon travail ; ça faisait un peu trop longtemps que je n'avais pas tenu un crayon...

Musée Vélo Moto

Chateau de Bosc

Last Saturday we visited a winery estate cum museum and art gallery, the Chateau de Bosc a few kilometres west of Avignon. Part of the chateau (more of a large mansion really) hosts a Cycles and Motorcycles museum featuring a unique collection of antique pieces such as the above. In some other rooms and in the garden, contemporary artworks are displayed, all for sale. The attic features a play area for children. I'd often driven past this place without stopping but this time the initiative came from my friends of  the Avignon Sketch Crawl group. We meet once a month to draw and paint from real life and this time someone figured it would be a good idea to practice drawing velocipedes, bicycles, penny-farthings, tricycles, quadracycles and the like (not sure what they all are ? check out  the history of the bicycle here). Do you have any idea how hard it is, especially when you discover that the chateau isn't heated ? No heating in February, you gotta be joking! Staying put for half-an-hour intervals with sketchbook and pencil in (frozen) hand wasn't really our idea of fun  and we finished earlier than planned. Fortunately the lady at the reception was kind enough to offer a second visit free of charge later in the year. I look forward to going back in warmer conditions but we had a great time anyway looking at this amazing display of craftmanship and human ingenuity.
By the way it appears that my camera also suffered from the cold: at some stage it stopped focusing and started only producing blurred photos - I saved this one from the lot, I hope you'll get the idea of what I was trying to capture.

Samedi dernier je suis allée au Chateau de Bosc, un domaine viticole et oléïcole situé à Domazan à quelques kilomètres d'Avignon. Il abrite un Musée du Cycle et de la Moto ainsi qu'une galerie d'art contemporain et dans le grenier un Musée des enfants. J'étais souvent passée devant en allant au pont du Gard mais sans jamais m'arrêter et cette fois-ci ce sont mes amis du groupe de Sketch Crawl d'Avignon qui m'y ont attirée. Nous nous retrouvons une fois par mois pour dessiner sur le vif et cette fois-ci on a décidé de s'essayer à dessiner des draisiennes, grands bis, quadracycles et autres curiosités vélocipédiques (pour un petit rappel de l'histoire de la bicyclette, cliquer ici). J'ai souffert, c'est super difficile, surtout quand on découvre que le château n'est pas chauffé. Pas chauffé en février, c'est une blague ? Autant dire que rester immobiles pendant des demi-heures entières avec le carnet de croquis dans une main (congelée) et le crayon dans l'autre nous a un peu refroidis. Nous avons écourté la visite. Heureusement la jeune femme à l'entrée nous a promis une deuxième visite gratuite plus tard en saison pour revenir dessiner dans de meilleures conditions. Ca c'est gentil ! En attendant, nous avons quand même bien apprécié cet incroyable étalage de créativité et d'ingéniosité humaines. On reviendra.

 PS - il semble que mon APN lui aussi ait souffert du froid : à partir d'un moment il a cessé de faire la mise au point et n'a plus produit que des photos floues. J'en ai malgré tout gardé quelques-unes dont celle ci-dessus. J'espère que vous comprendrez ce que j'ai essayé de rendre.

Sketch in the city

Pont St Benezet, Avignon

A couple of images of last month's 35th Sketch Crawl on Saturday 21st April (see more images here) to announce our next Sketch in the City event  today Saturday 19th May, this time not in Avignon but in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, meet in front of the Tourist Office at 9:30 AM.  No need to register in advance, just turn up at said time and place with your sketch book and pencils and we'll sketch around together. The Saturday antiques market will provide a great first subject. Come and join us!

Deux images du 35ème Sketch Crawl qui a eu lieu le mois dernier le samedi 21 avril (voir d'autres images ici)  pour vous annoncer notre prochaine rando-croquis  ce matin samedi 19 mai 2012, non pas à Avignon cette fois mais à Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, devant l'office du tourisme à 9h30. Pas besoin de vous inscrire, venez simplement à l'heure dite avec votre carnet de croquis et vos crayons, nous dessinerons ensemble. Le marché à la brocante du samedi nous fournira un excellent premier sujet. Venez nous rejoindre !

Claudio et le cerf

Marché à la brocante du samedi matin, Villeneuve-lèz-AvignonJe vous présente Claudio Castello. Quand j'ai entrepris de dessiner la superbe tête de cerf qu'il vendait il m'a très gentiment apporté un tabouret. Le fauteuil contemporain qui brillait d'un blanc aveuglant juste à côté du cerf n'aidait pas à créer une composition équilibrée et j'ai été ravie de voir Claudio s'y asseoir. Quand je lui ai demandé s'il voulait bien ne pas bouger pendant trois minutes le temps que je fasse un portrait rapide, il a très gentiment accepté. Ensuite il a pris diverses poses que j''ai eu plaisir à photographier. Vous trouverez mon dessin ci-dessous. Il laisse à désirer sur de nombreux plans : proportions, perspective (et puis il faut que j'apprenne à dessiner les mains !!!) mais il m'encourage à continuer à dessiner, j'adore ça. Maintenant la question que je me pose c'est si je le mets en couleurs ou pas. Tel quel, il manque de relief, c'est certain, mais j'ai peur de tout gâcher. A votre avis, je tente ? Je ne pourrai pas revenir en arrière...
Meet Claudio Castello. When I set out to sketch the magnificent deer head he was selling he kindly found me a stool to sit on. The glary white contemporary chair next to the deer didn't help create an interesting composition so I was delighted to see Claudio sit in it. When I asked him whether he would agree not to move for three minutes, time enough for me to do a quick portrait, he kindly obliged. Later on he struck a number of other poses which I enjoyed taking pictures of. Below is my sketch. Let's face it, there's room for much improvement : proportions, perspective (and wish I could draw hands to begin with !!!) but the final result is fun enough to make me want to keep sketching. For this one I'm still debating with myself whether I should add watercolours or not. As is, my sketch lacks depth, that's for sure - but what if I spoil it all? What do you think, should I try? There will be no turning back...

Les prospères brocanteurs

Marché à la Brocante, Villeneuve-lèz-AvignonLast Saturday our sketch crawl group met at the Saturday antiques market in Villeneuve-lèz-Avignon. Sketching around the market was gorgeous fun. Here's a fun portrait fellow sketcher Marie-France did : with their round bellies she called them 'the prosperous antique dealers'. A while later I photographed one of them, seated. You might recognise his hat, moustache and yellow shirt...

Samedi dernier, notre groupe de rando-croqueurs s'est réuni au marché à la brocante de Villeneuve-lèz-Avignon. Il y avait plein de choses à dessiner, on s'est beaucoup amusés. Voici un portrait fait par Marie-France, une de nos croqueuses : ventre rond, les prospères brocanteurs ? Un peu plus tard, j'ai photographié l'un d'eux assis : vous reconnaitrez sans doute son chapeau, sa moustache et sa chemise jaune.
Ci-dessous, un poisson très fâché surveille le fort St André et ses abords.

Sketch in the city

Place St Pierre, AvignonSquare Agricol Perdiguier, AvignonLast Saturday a small but keen group of amateur sketchers met in Avignon for a new session of what I'd like to call "sketch in the city", a local initiative inspired by Sketch Crawl. We decided we'd meet once a month. Our locations this time included the Agricol Perdiguier gardens in the morning and place St Pierre in the afternoon - where we came across the bunch of church chairs being discarded which I talked about in this post. I picked one and what do you think I did with it? I used it as a comfy seat for the rest of the afternoon. However I didn't want to take it home (I knew I'd never have the energy to treat it for woodworms and it really needed it) so when I was done with it I decided to leave it in town in a place useful to others. In the end I chose to leave it in a corner of Place Pie where homeless people often hang out. I was pleased to see that soon enough the chair was used by a couple of them. Unfortunately two days later the chair was no longer there. I wonder if it was removed by city council cleaners or taken home by someone ? I guess I'll never know.
Samedi dernier un petit groupe de dessinateurs amateurs s'est réuni pour ce que j'aimerais bien nommer "sketch in the city" une initiative locale inspirée du Sketch crawl. Nous avons décidé de nous retrouver une fois par mois pour croquer ensemble sur le vif des scènes de rue à Avignon. Cette fois-ci nous avons travaillé dans le square Agricol Perdiguier le matin et sur la place St Pierre l'après-midi... et c'est là que nous sommes tombés sur le lot de chaises d'église partant au feu dont j'ai parlé ici. J'en ai récupéré une et qu'en ai-je fait ? Je m'en suis servie tout l'après-midi pour dessiner confortablement. Mais je ne voulais pas la rapporter chez moi (je savais que je n'aurais jamais le courage de la traiter contre les vers), j'ai donc décidé de la laisser en ville à un endroit utile. Finalement je l'ai posée sur la place Pie au coin du conservatoire où je vois souvent des SDF et en effet j'ai eu le plaisir de voir très peu de temps après l'un d'entre eux s'y reposer. Malheureusement deux jours plus tard la chaise avait disparu. Enlevée par les services de nettoyage municipal ou récupérée par quelqu'un ? Je ne saurai sans doute jamais...

Chez Rouberty

Rue du portail Magnanen, AvignonOn this recently renovated facade an old engraved sign appears beautifully restored : Chez Rouberty on loge à pied et à cheval, which roughly translates as "Rouberty's, providing accommodation for people travelling on foot or on horseback". I wonder when this dates back to?
My special thanks to Jean-Louis Choquer for pointing out this sign to me during last month's Sketchcrawl. Who is Jean-Louis? Meet him through the photo and portrait I made of him on that day.
Sur une façade récemment rénovée, un ancien bandeau gravé a été remis en valeur : "Chez Rouberty on loge à pied et à cheval". Je me demande de quand il date ?
Remarque : j'avais écrit Roubert, Michel m'a fait remarquer le Y difficilement visible. C'est sans doute bien Rouberty en effet. Merci Michel, j'ai corrigé.
Merci à Jean-Louis Choquer de m'avoir fait remarquer ce bandeau lors de notre Sketchcrawl le mois dernier, je ne l'avais jamais remarqué. Qui est Jean-Louis ? Le voici tel que je l'ai dessiné et photographié ce jour-là.
