Interested in archeology, history, traditional masonry techniques and the rich heritage of the south of France? For 2 weeks 14-27 August 2016, volunteers from all over the world can participate in a workcamp based up the hill above the village of
Beaumes-de-Venise in the heart of Provence and save the ruins of this old castle, the "Castellas".The workcamp is a partnership between not-for-profit organisations
Jeunesse et Reconstruction and Académie de Beaumes-de-Venise. During the workcamp one of your first missions will be to build a medieval-style wooden hut that will serve as a tool shed and welcome point for visitors. Those of you interested in traditional masonry techniques will help re-building some of the ancient stone walls on the Roman oppidum with the help of passionate specialists keen to share their knowledge. Another mission will be to clear the undergrowth in order to prepare the area for future projects and help visitors access the site. The hill shows signs of human occupation spanning over 25 centuries ranging from prehistoric to Roman and medieval times. The 2-week workcamp is part of a long-term project to turn the site into an area of discovery and experimentation for the general public with a hands-on approach that will combine guided visits and various workshops. Etes-vous passionné d’histoire et d’archéologie ? Pendant 2 semaines du 13 au 27 aout 2016 l'association Jeunesse et Reconstruction vous propose, en partenariat avec l'Académie de Beaumes-de-Venise, de participer à un chantier d’archéo-expérimentation
avec des jeunes du monde entier. La colline qui surplombe le village provençal de Beaumes-de-Venise porte des traces d'occupation humaine depuis plus de 25 siècles. Le projet est de développer sur plusieurs années tout un programme qui permettra au grand public de découvrir ce passé historique de manière interactive en participant à des visites guidées, des ateliers et des chantiers participatifs. Ce premier chantier du 13 au 27 août 2016 concernera le site du "Castellas", l’ancien
château situé sur les hauteurs du village et emplacement de l’ancien
oppidum romain. Votre
première mission sera de participer à la construction d’une cabane
médiévale en bois selon les techniques et usages de l’époque. Cette
cabane servira à l’avenir de point d’accueil aux visiteurs et
d’entrepôt. Une autre mission sera de reconstruire
des murs en pierre sèche sur le site de l’ancien oppidum romain : les apprentis bâtisseurs pourront s'approprier
cette technique ancestrale grâce à des spécialistes passionnés désireux de
transmettre leur savoir-faire. Enfin, un
travail de valorisation du site consistera à débroussailler le site afin
d’en faciliter l’accès aux visiteurs. D’autres travaux sont prévus pour

As you can see the Castellas is spectacular but in dire need of some tender loving care.
