Hiking in January

Hiking in Provence is fantastic in January, the temperatures are great. The walk around Le Beaucet and Saint Gens offers a great diversity of landscapes. In the photo below, can you spot the troglodyte house huddled against the cliff? The red door will help you. In winter the south facing facade ensures plenty of sunshine and in winter the big tree in front of the house provides refreshing shade. Do you think you could live there? The nearest village is 3 km away but the nearest shops are more like 6 km.

Towering above the ermitage of Saint Gens, an amazing rock called the mushroom monolith (mushroom is "champignon" in French). Far in the distance pinky shades suggest the town of Carpentras. Last Sunday was a beautiful day for hiking. If you stay on the track the view you get of the rock is the one below. I had to climb right up to get the full perspective above. That was fun. To get an idea of the monolith's size, see the head and shoulders of the hiker standing at its base.

Colourful macarons for sale at "Le monde du macaron" at  13 rue rouge, one of Avignon's pedestrian streets. From what people say, they're very nice. Check out their facebook page.

Flamingoes of Camargue, continued

Pink flamingoes of the Camargue, continued. The nature park of Pont de Gau is a photographer's paradise. The flamingoes are so close, especially at feeding times, that you don't even need a huge telelens on your camera. January is the time when males engage in courtship parades where they stretch out their necks very tall, screeching and turning their heads left and right.  If you've got a zoom you'll catch every detail of their feathers and you'll also be able to photograph more discrete species such as herons and ducks. More about the park on their website here.

The charge of the pink flamingoes

Watch here the video I took last Saturday in the Camargue: The charge of the pink flamingoes.
It's pretty spectacular. Where was it exactly? Here.

Café

One short black, one latte, or what's left of them. Sugar cube wrappings. Long winter shadows.
A very nice moment.

Longues ombres d'hiver.
Un très bon moment.

Dentelles de Montmirail

Continued from this post. After I took my first set of photos the sky turned so dark that I considered turning back and going home but in the end I decided to keep going and climb further up, hoping for a tear in the clouds. How right was I. Suddenly the dentelles turned to a glowing gold and then slowly veered to pink with Mount Ventoux in the distance. It was exhilarating. I got home at dusk.

For Janine aka Nine who always signs "your closest neighbor" and who's been pestering me for months to start blogging again, a photo of her beloved Dentelles de Montmirail, the closest mountain range to where we live . She knows the area like the back of her hand, she's hiked here ever since she was little. The day before yesterday the light was absolutely spectacular. You're right Nine, our backyard is a beautiful part of the world. More photos in my next post.

Still life with cat

Still life with sleeping cat. Photo taken last summer in my sister's garden. After we had a mid-afternoon glass of fruit juice her cat settled for a nap on the tray. Of all places. As cats do.
This post is linked to Saturday Critters and Camera Critters. Click if you're curious!
