The cupola

Cathedrale Notre-Dame des Doms
Next to the Palais des Papes is the 12th-century Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms. The cathedral was first built in a pure Provençal Romanesque style in the 12th century but was soon dwarfed by the extravagant palace that rose beside it.
An attempt to remedy this was made in the 14th century with the addition of a cupola, which promptly collapsed. Rebuilt in 1425, the cupola is a Byzantine-like marvel of stacked arches.
The Baroque galleries were added in the 17th century and crowning the top of the cathedral is a huge gilded Virgin Mary lantern from the 19th century, whose glow can be seen for miles around - see here, there and also there.
Inside, the cathedral contains the Flamboyant Gothic tombs of some of the Avignon popes. Like most of Avignon's churches, the cathedral was sacked during the Revolution (source Sacred Destinations).

Good photograph of a beautiful building. I wonder how many Notre Dame named churches there are in France...

It looks like a very nice little romanesque church from this angle, but rather kitsch with the gold Virgin Mary from the other angles!

Is the roof being changed in your photo or is it always like that?

! ! A bientôt Nathalie !

Sorry to hear you were having trouble seeing the photo of the miraculous mule painting... I think Blogger was having problems earlier today after the planned outage last night, I had trouble too... but it seems to be cleared up now, so try again soon.

Are there any votive paintings inside this church depicting miraculous events ? If not yet, I think someone will have to do a painting of you narrowly escaping a falling parasol pine tree ! For clearly your survival of that narrowly averted tragedy is truly a miracle... :D

Owen I'll have to visit the inside of the cathedral to check out if there are any ex-votos - It's been a while since I last went in, I'm not a great fan of churches I have to confess.
