The Migrant

Woman carrying a suitcase, red house, closed shutters, burning sun. What story is unfolding here?

Femme portant une valise, maison rouge, volets fermés, soleil brûlant. Quelle histoire se joue ici ?

I'm back in Avignon but haven't retrieved any photos from my camera yet. Here's one I took last summer in l'Isle sur Sorgue. I like its enigmatic feel but in fact the woman is my younger sister and the suitcase is an old leather one we'd found next to a rubbish bin. Although we had no use for it we just had to pick it up - doesn't it make for a gorgeous prop?

Bonne reprise, Nathalie

Welcome home. We know about burning sun here this summer.

Love the photo. Nobody carries suitcases like that any more. (Why didn't they figure out wheels on suitcases sooner?) This could be a movie still from the earliest days of color cinema.

The solitude of this photo makes one wonder where she is going and why, and what she has left behind.

You have a marvelous and enigmatic mood in this photo, Nathalie. Thanks for your explanation.

Bob you're right, no-one carries suitcases like this one any more. I guess that's why this image is so special.

What a great image. I lived in France for a while, but I've never been to Avignon. It looks lovely. I'm glad to have found your blog.

Right. Ingrid Bergman carried a suitcase like this in the Gare-Whatever in Casablanca. Nobody carries suitcases like this in airports.

Adore this photo. Enigmatic for sure. I like the comment comparing it to a movie still. Colours, position of your sister, perfect. I wish I walked with such a beautifully straight back as she does!

Timeless photo. It could be from the 1940s or 50s.
