Eat and be eaten

Villeneuve lès Avignon
If you think this is just a pretty butterfly on lavender shot, look again. Life at its most cruel is at work here: to eat and be eaten. A fluttering nectar-lover met an ambushed predator - and his death. Several times in this lavender bush did I try to take pictures of the many butterflies around. To my frustration they never seemed to stay in place for more than a second. I was finally overjoyed to discover one that stayed on. Only when I came right up to it for a macro shot did I realise why it couldn't fly away: he'd fallen prey to a praying mantis who was devouring its entrails. A better image of the feast can be found below.

What amazing shots Nathalie. Nature seems cruel. I have just started to post some macro shots myself but never caught anything like that

Bonjour! Nathalie,

I think that is the "cycle"
of life!...One predator preys on another and then a predator preys on them and another pre...

Merci, for sharing!

cheer up Nathalie, think of it this way, only death can hold the butterfly down, otherwise he continues in the ecstasy of his flight and nothing can stop him not even Nathalie's camera, so think of it that way. ha ha.
hugs.

And I was about to eat lunch! I think you and Abe should be sent away somewhere...!

So sad, so cruel, but yes, it's nature. Superb photos, Nathalie.

Amazing photo the second one! It is strangely fascinating to look at, and I'm sure the butterfly only has a very short life-span anyway!

Absolutely incredible photos Nathalie... excellent reporting job... and I was wondering if you were going to continue reporting on the Theater Festival; but this is from the Theater or Life.

On YouTube this past weekend saw where someone had posted a video of two lions taking down a large giraffe, scenes which cause the same sort of fascination as your photos here.

It's a good thing I guess that there is no race of a giant praying mantis that would lie hidden in flower beds waiting for human photographers to lean a little too close with their macro lens ; ... then snickety snack !

Yes, sometimes I think that by eliminating bears and tigers and mountain lions from all but the most remote places on Earth, we have rendered our lives a little too distant from the eat or be eaten side of nature... it would really be something if when walking down the street we would have to wonder if a saber-toothed tiger might not be lurking behind a bush... then we might really begin to understand a few things about how our not so distant ancestors lived. And how they protected their children from such hungry beasts... in order to survive.

O mon Dieu, what a photograph!! Super drama.

Wow, and they say preying mantises are good luck...apparently not for the butterfly. Still, it is an amazing shot and great glimpse into our world.

The mantis must be one of the scariest creatures around - as demonstrated by this great macro shot. Like Alien. And if you're a male mantis then the female is even scarier.....

You take amazingly good photos but part of me wishes I hadn't seen this one...
