Sunday at the beach

Bordighera, ItalyYesterday's underground walkway lead to... a beach!
This is the little town of Bordighera on the Italian coast near the French border, just a few kilometres from Menton. I was there last weekend with blogging friend Jilly of Menton Daily Photo fame. She and I had a ball exploring the lovely old town. Taking advantage of the very warm weather I also enjoyed two very long swims in the Med on Saturday and Sunday. What a beautiful weekend !
PS - the reason for the underground passage is that the railway line passes right behind the beach. The pink building you see in the background above is the Bordighera train station. Access to the beach is under the railway tracks. Originally a small village of fishermen and farmers founded in 1470, Bordighera saw a historical changewhen the railway track was built in 1872. Wealthy families from Germany, Austria, England, Russia or France were able to use the Trans-Express lines to come here for extended stays. Bordighera became a fashionable seaside resort town, which it still is today.

In the haze in the background are Menton, France and Monte Carlo.

Lovely beach, not too crowded... but the sun is still perfecting her tan!

The impact of railroad access to beach towns is also certainly apparent in the Cinque Terra villages further down the coast.

Ouf !

Ooh, this looks rather lovely. I have never been to an Italian beach resort, but these shots make me put Italy on the 'list'.

Huh! I laughed at Mainz comment. Not me, honest Mister. I love the photo, Nathalie and just to say it was so good to spend time with you exploring Bordighera. Your underground passage yesterday is a super photo. Like when all those people got off the space ship in 2001. Well sort of!
