At the end of the day

Back in Provence today I warm up to the sun, so desperately absent in Paris. But if the sky is blue the spirit is far from festive. On December 23rd I'll be going back to Paris for a Christmas that'll be my mother's last. We'll all be around her. She promised to hold on until then. Beyond that I doubt she'll carry on much longer. But she continues to look to the future by choosing musics, poems and hymns for her funeral. It's a wonderful project to share with her, she's always been such a good party planner and this way we'll know we'll be doing things the way she wanted them. She considered playing Samuel Barber's Adagio for strings but later rejected it: too sad. "You'll  bring everyone to tears", said my sister! I agree. Do you ?

Your photo and post today is very poignant. You will miss your mother, but how wonderful that you got to plan her farewell with her. If you haven't yet and if it's possible, record your mother's voice. My mother died suddenly years ago, and it saddens me that I cannot recall the sound of her voice. My thoughts are with you and I am lighting a candle right now for you, your mother, and your entire family.

What a beautiful, elegiac photo. It has a quality of light that, I don't know, you could breathe.

My thoughts are with you. I remember the Christmas of 1974, when I had graduated law school and married Carolyn only months before. We went to New Jersey to see my family. My mother was in a hospital in New York, dying of cancer. When Carolyn and I first looked in the room we didn't recognize her.

Yes, I think the Barber would make everyone cry. Might that be a good thing?

I want the Second Movement of Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 played at my memorial service. http://youtu.be/DoeURsyVdBU. It has a certain sweetness.

Oh Nathalie, this is very sad that you have to go to Paris, on Christmas, to take leave of your mother. But it is wonderful that you are all planning a fitting farewell together.
The music is beautiful and I imagine that with or without this piece, people will be crying.

May your mother, you, and all the family arrive at peace.
God bless you.

What a fine photo.

A poignant post.

My mother passed away a year and a half ago of cancer. It's been the great blow of my life... I still miss her.

Make as much of whatever time you have left with her.

Oh, Nathalie, Que ça me rend triste, pour toi.
