French kiss

Friday 29th February, 2008, bar-tabac located corner of rue Bonneterie and rue Philonarde.

They weren't faking it and it lasted quite a while. It was a genuine French kiss.

Claude pointed out a key detail: both protagonists are smokers. They had to go outside to smoke.

For several weeks I've been willing to do a piece on a secondary consequence of the smoking ban in bars, cafes and restaurants : cigarette butts littering the pavement in front of these establishments. But my subject evolved when this opportunity arose!

* soupir * - ressembler à l'amusement : -)

Fabulous! And so right in black and white. I agree with Michel - we'll be calling you Robert Doisneau soon! Great photo, Nathalie.

Hmmmm, yes I noticed the cigarettes - nice kiss but doubtless smelly breath!

Jilly I hate smoker's breath.
Actually you just reminded me of why I don't smoke. I started smoking a cigarette now and then when I was 17, maybe 3 a day, mainly to look like a grown-up but one day my boyfriend commented on my bad breath and urged me to stop. I was far more addicted to the boyfriend than I was to smoking so I quit that day and never smoked again. I left him two years later but the good habit remained. I cannot thank him enough for the good influence he had on me.

Wow, I did not even notice they were smoking. :-o The kiss was 'smokin' enough!
(Nice anecdote about how you stopped the habit Nathalie ;-)

Very nice capture, and as others have said it works in b+w. I wonder how they were able to hold on to their cigarettes and kiss? If I smoked, I couldn't kiss and hold a cigarette at the same time. The kiss has to be 100%; maybe the cigarette means more to them than the kiss?

Very nice--whenever I am in France I see people kissing like this here and there and it is very nice--it makes me savor more kisses with my significant other too-- take the time to enjoy the kiss-- Paris is the most famous place for it, to me.

Even the most addicted smoker can give it up for a French kiss!

MY weekly drop in. Not disappointed, as usual.

Congrats on the succesful Avignon/Australia event. Good post.

Reading these different comments, I guess I have no choice; I must stop smoking! … although personally I would not refuse a nice kiss by a lady smoker.

(Maybe this time, the cigarettes were completely consumed before they finished the kiss?)

I thought it was staged at first, this is really superb result from street photography. Well done.

Gob-smacking image...brilliant...I gazed at it for ages. Love also your posts on the Aboriginal Festival...I know that Aboriginal art is very popular and highly thought of in France. However,I did find it quite bizarre that there were no Aboriginal people speaking, or even an Aussie for that matter.

When the moon hits your eye, like a big pizza pie, that's amoré. You can light a cigarette, with a quick téte á téte, that's amoré.

Smoke rings float, ding-a-ling-a-ling...

You see what your picture has done to me :)

Quand on s'est connus,
Quand on s'est reconnus,
Pourquoi s'perdre de vue,
Se reperdre de vue ?
Quand on s'est retrouvés,
Quand on s'est réchauffés,
Pourquoi se séparer ?

Alors tous deux, on est repartis
Dans l'tourbillon de la vie
On a continué à tourner
Tous les deux enlacés...

Beau portrait, tu étais un pause longue ;o)

It looks good in black and white.

Gorgeous image of a French Kiss. Smokers do kiss each other - here's the proof. Personally Nathalie, I think that smokers get a really rough deal from society in general. The cigarette butt problem could be erased if the buildings provided ashtrays and had them emptied regularly. Most smokers will look for an ashtray before being forced to put their cigarette out on the ground. There is an old saying that if you put people in a pigsty they will behave like pigs. Provide the facility and some better behaviour might be witnessed. Well, that's my hope, anyway.

I fully agree, mme benaut. A large sandpot on the pavement, maybe?

belle photo

Had to laugh at the cigarettes; talk about an addiction!

Did they know they were being photographed or did they not notice? Probably didn't or didn't care!

Anonymous said...

in fact Kate they knew they were being photographed but while they started by posing for the photo they ended up kissing for good!

The kiss took on a life of its own!
