Vote for Jacques Prévert

It's election day everywhere in France today - we're electing our mayors and city council members. We have about half a dozen lists of candidates here in Avignon but my favourite electoral poster is this one, which sudddenly appeared overnight yesterday: "Keep in touch with the child within. Vote for Jacques Prévert". Jacques Prévert (1900-1977) is a French poet, artist and song writer whose free spirit was a joy and an inspiration to many including me. He died fourty years ago but it's lovely to find his spirit is still in the air. Do take the time to read a few of his quotes here (the English translations could be better but at least they're here).

I reckon this guy was on the right track...keeping in touch with the child within. And, yes , Araratdaily, I thought the same thing before I read the caption!

Poem by Jaques Prévert

How to make the portrait of a bird

(free translation)

First of all paint a cage
with an open door
then paint something pretty
something simple
something beautiful
something useful
for the bird
Place the canvas against a tree
in a garden
in a wood
or in a forest
Then hide behind the tree
keep silent
don't move...

Sometimes the bird arrives quickly
but sometimes it takes years
Don't lose hope
wait
wait for years if necessary.

whether the bird arrives sooner or later has no nothing to do
With how good the painting will be

When the bird comes
if it comes
keep the deepest silence
wait till the bird enters the cage
and when it's in
Close the door softly with your paintbrush
then one by the one wipe off all the bars
careful not to touch any of the bird's feathers

Then make the portrait of the tree
choosing its most beautiful branch
for the bird
paint also the green foliage and the cool breeze
the dust in the sun
and the noise of bugs in the grass
in the summer heat
and then, wait till the bird decides to sing

If the bird doesn't sing
it's a bad sign
sign that the picture is bad
but if it sings it's a good sign
sign that you can sign

Now very softly
Pluck one of the bird's feathers
and use it to write your name
in a corner of the painting.

What a beautiful poem. Thanks for presenting it in English, Nathalie. So beautiful, so moving. Love that someone posted this for election day.

I've been awake half the night worrying about who to vote for. Our current mayor does so much culturally for the village - he's an artist and I really like him. But we've had bigtime dramas over a donation of paintings by an Indian artist who works in the village - Raza. The village and he have fallen out. Now we have two other lists (one good) - yet I like our mayor...but he's struggled to find a full list to stand again.

Jilly, interesting comments you make about how to vote.

Here in Avignon we've had the same Mayor for two mandates i.e. 2 x 6 years = 12 years. Her name is Marie-José Roig and she's a liberal (used to be a good friend of Jacques Chirac's). She's turning 70 this year and I believe she should bow out but she's worked at a third time a re-election with determination and energy, and it looks like she will get it.
Sigh!

Bon dimanche "electoral"..

Great poster and delightful sign with a bit of whimsy. The poem is also delightful, primarily because of the images and the message.

I left an answer for you re. sombreros on my blog! Have a great Sunday!

It's impossible to choose Jacques Prévert in this elction in 2008 but one can have the same political orientation.

merci
bonne journee

Nathalie, please could you look at Menton DP today and tell me if you know who the group are - or perhaps can tell by their costumes if they are a traditional group in France. Many thanks.

Attends Nathalie !
