Industrial action

Boulevard Limbert
Massive industrial action throughout France yesterday, including Avignon. Teachers, postmen and a majority of civil servants were on strike and demonstrated along the city's ramparts. A few weeks ago our President Nicolas Sarkozy said mockingly that "nowadays when there's a strike no-one even notices" - unions made a point of turning this event into something BIG that couldn't go unnoticed, hence the sign above: "Hello Sarko, can you see this strike now?"

I see a lot of colorful people all dressed up on parade. The signs are a sign of the times I guess which explains why they are carried -- so the people will know what they are all doing on parade.

I love the passion in France. Last time we were in Paris we got caught up in the middle of a May Day parade on our way to the airport.

As i learned while in Paris, the French have a wonderful time demonstrating for their passionate beliefs and do it often! Love your collage å la Peter. He will be very pleased I think! HA

Strikes are a real event in France.

We haven't had much news about the strike here, but there was an item in the paper yesterday about Sarko's treatment of two women cabinet ministers.

Nathalie - a tennis question. At the French Open, are the score, line calls etc made in French? I can't imagine why they wouldn't be, but it's a while since I have seen the FO on TV - it's only on pay, and in the middle of the night!

Sorry about Simon and Tsonga....at least Federer can speak French, apparently!

Great photos - it all looks quite fun really!
I think the problem with strikes and demonstrations in France is that they became a cacophony of contrasting opinions. Somebody in your photos has an anti-nuclear banner, but alongside that person there was probably a group from the EDF asking for more investment - which means in nuclear power I'm afraid! Everybody comes along with their own demands which is normal, but how is anyone supposed to satisfy all of them?

Je passe d'une manif à l'autre.

Well, it seems that our posts today have a certain resemblance ... even more than "certain"!
There were some really nice slogans, still with a touch of humour!
I was surprised to see how well transports worked yesterday in Paris and the city seemed rather empty. I guess a lot of people dedcided to take a day off.

Bon WE

I applaud the fact that France is still s bastion of freedom of speech. You really captured ate atmosphere so well.

Great coverage of yesterday's event, Nathalie. Well done. Fabulous signs, colours, atmosphere.

The roads were empty around here yesterday - I suppose everyone was in Nice protesting although the newspaper today seemed to think it wasn't nearly such a big strike as expected and many trains did run etc.

Anyway Sarko presumably noticed!

It is the only power we own to filter the colours of collective consciousness.

merci pour un autre chef-d'œuvre
Nathalie.
