The last of Christmas

Rue Joseph Vernet
The little chalets of the Christmas market have been dismantled and put away this week and most Christmas trees have now been thrown away too but this is one example of Christmas decorations that are still up. I find it pretty classy but it's no wonder: rue Joseph Vernet is one of the most upmarket streets of Avignon. It is lined with expensive clothes shops and galleries (as you can see on the awning here). Perhaps the reason behind the art galleries is that the man who gave his name to the street, Joseph Vernet, was a French painter, born in Avignon in 1714, died 1789, who specialized in marine painting. His work was much appreciated in his time and still is. A collection of 14 paintings of French ports can be seen in the maritime museum of Paris (Musée de la Marine) - they document in remarkable detail the life of ports 250 years ago. Learn more...

Lovely tasteful decor. I am happy to see them still up. Snow all gone? Well your photos were grand!!!

Virginia yes the snow has all gone but I still have a few snow photos up my sleeve that I really like. I'll post them soon but I thought you people might tire of them so I'm giving you a break.

The terrace above the decorations 'fait rever'! What a lovely appartment that must be...

Adam you're right I should do a post one day about those very discreet rooftop terraces - there are plenty around and they're all wonderful!

Bises !

Bon week-end!

I am delighted to meet you. I love to travel, so now you can show me France! (I've been there, but not to Avignon)I started out this year saying I want to expand my blog borders to friends across the globe, and here you are! Thanks for introducing yourself.

So love these Avignon stone buildings and this one is so attractive with its warm shutters and Christmas decorations.

It is a lovely street scene. I do like shutter, but not much call for them here.

Curious...what is the significance of the round red spot on white attached to the awning?

It is a nice-looking building to be sure.

So beautiful posts! :)

Abe, the round spot isn't attached to the awning, it's a signpost placed in front of it. It's an "authorized but limited parking" sign. 2 hour limit, you must pay at the parking meter nearby.
A typically French sign?

chère Nathalie,

Quelle photo charmante Nathalie.
