The lion's teeth

Fort Saint André, Villeneuve lès Avignon
The name dandelion comes from the French 'dents de lion', lion's teeeth - apparently based on the sharp edges of the plant's leaves. But their name in French is "pissenlit", derived from "pisse-au-lit" (pee in bed), an allusion to the plant's diuretic properties. The origin of words and their evolution never ceases to amaze me. Anyway these bright yellow flowers make for a superb golden prairie amidst the olive trees at the foot of Villeneuve-les-Avignon's old fort.

That is alot of dandelions there, they are really thriving. And at the rate they manufacture seeds, it is amazing they haven't taken over the planet !

Belle récolte de couleurs.

Very pretty scene. I thought at first you were referring to the crenellations at the top of the wall in the background. Firing arrows from those ramparts could make them pretty sharp too:)

Interesting that the English and French words for dandelions are so different when they come from the same language. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that in England in the Middle Ages, French was the language of the 'refined aristocracy'.
