Votez !

Université d'Avignon
Caught this banner as I was driving past the Avignon University gates :
Students representatives elections today : VOTE!
It made me think of the regional elections we'll be having in less than two weeks now : polls are predicting a globally left wing majority as is usually the case in regional elections but what all parties fear is that the results could be twisted by a very low participation rate. Democracy needs large numbers of voters in order to work properly. Sorry if my post today is a serious one but it's a reminder to all French citizens:
on 14 and 21 March, VOTE!

In the PACA region where we belong, the current President is socialist Michel Vauzelle (seated just to the right of the speaker here, not easy to see). He has a fair chance of being re-elected. Here's a photo of his campaign meeting in the beautiful salons of Avignon's town hall last Thursday. The PACA region encompasses Provence, the southern Alps and the Mediterranean coast from Marseilles to Menton.

Bonjour! Nathalie,

I agree. No apologies here. We ALL need to be reminded to vote. What a precious privilege it is for those of us who are able to have a say in the way our countries are run.

As a foreigner living in France, yet one who runs a business and pays taxes, I'm not permitted to vote in national elections. I can only vote for my Mayor and also in the European elections. At the moment I'm getting phone calls from candidates but as soon as I say I'm not eligible, down goes the phone! It always surprises me that after 19 years in France, paying my taxes as I said, I have no voting rights. For that I must be a citizen, not simply a resident.

Depuis 4 mois qu'elle me manque. La campagne.

Jilly - the right to vote comes with citizenship. Why don't you ask for it? You can still keep your British passport, you can have dual citizenship.
Why would someone who's been living in France and paying tax here for 19 years refuse citizenship yet want the right to vote?

French citizenship with its rights and duties attached is an important part of our psyche. You either want yourself in or out of the system but it's a full package.

Nathalie, you know I've never thought of it yet I have no intention of ever living anywhere but France. I'll die here, for sure. So yes why not? I didn't even think it possible but that's my fault - I've never thought it thru.

I think perhaps my surprise arose because when I lived in Australia I could vote and presumed it would be the same here.

You took a photo whilst driving?

I would vote if I was allowed to! I can vote in municipal elections, but not regional ones. Where is the logic in that?

So now we know who you are voting for!

No apologies needed for encouraging people to vote. We had an election in Costa Rica on Feb. 7 and elected the first woman President, Laura Chincilla, of the same party as the outgoing President, Nobel Peace Prize winner Oscar Arias.

Costa Ricans are justifiably proud to live in the only country in the region that has had 60 years of stable democracy.

Bibi you've got it all wrong, my own choice is very green!!!
:-)))

Thanks Dave for telling us about the recent election in Costa Rica. It's a small country that we hear little about here in France but it remains dear to my heart since in lived there back in 1979-1980.

The history of South and Central America is such a tormented one that Costa Rica's remarkable stability and democratic achievements are worthy of note.

Well done Costa Rica!

Adam I was at the wheel when I took the photo but the car wasn't moving!

jeff said...

Michel from hell ?... Merde ! ! !...:)))

Ceciel said...

Nathalie H.D. said...
