Place du Palais des PapesToday 1st of December is theme day for City Daily Photo bloggers and today's theme is Time. Time can either mean the time shown on a clock or the passing of time. Here it's time for a smoking break (my Aussie mates would say a smoko) for three youngsters on Place du palais des papes.
The bad news is that over time female cigarette consumption is on the rise in France : the latest Health watch report published in October 2010 reveals that in 2005 16% of French women smoked daily - the figure is now 22.5%. Another alarming figure: 24% of pregnant women smoke daily throughout their pregnancy. The time for a tobacco-free society has not come and that's not good news for French women's health.
Speaking of women and tobacco, I found this discarded packet of Gitanes in the gutter the other day. Gitanes and Gauloises used to be the two French brands of cigarettes but you hardly ever see anyone smoking them these days... I am also amazed that anyone can keep smoking when large "smoking kills" signs appear on the packet. Gitanes are closely associated with French songwriter and singer Serge Gainsbourg - listen to him singing "Tu es un fumeur de gitanes" with Catherine Deneuve here.

Nice take on the theme
I love that song but am I ever glad I don't smoke - vile habit!
This time your news is worrying.
Maybe it is time to ask why our young people need smoke.
I agree Nathalie. I am amazed at the number of young men and women who are still smoking, here but more so in Paris. Absolutely no excuse for pregnant women to smoke! I have a friend that is keeping a foster care baby. When she got him at about 3 months, he smelled of smoke and had a lingering cough. Luckily he is now a very healthy and happy boy.
Excellent photo. I like your monochromatic treatment. The light is terrific!

Tu as bugué Nathalie today.
Very nice shot!
Maybe it is time to stop soking now :)

This is a creative if sad interpretation of the theme, since time can refer to so many things. I'm surprised by the smoking rates you discuss, especially since cigarettes are so expensive in Europe (Missouri has the lowest state cig tax in the US). I think the warning must cover half the package in the UK and it doesn't seem to do much good there, either.
Thanks for the heads-up on the typo in the title of my Tuesday post. I'll have a time theme for Wednesday from a different point of view.
By the way, my wife and I are thinking about a trip to your part of the world, probably late next summer. I've had a brief email exchange with Jilly about it and I'll copy you on anything further. We certainly want to see both of you.
Hurray Bob, it would be grand to see you here, I look forward to that! (I'll have to improve my photography by then)
Rather than say 'smoko', Nathalie, I simply say 'yucko'!
I do like the timeless nature of your sepia photograph today.
This was a very thought provoking picture and a great take on time. I kicked the filthy habit 3 years ago and agree with Julie Smoko = Yucko. Love your blog Nathalie, I have never been to Avignon but your evocative pictures take me there.
A great, great picture indeed. Chapeau !
May time and life continue to treat them kind.
Please have a good new month.

Too right, I see so many young people smoking. Love your way of using the word time. And such a good photo - almost shocking when we think how young they are and now sick they could be in x number of years. Time should be used well.
Bob if you look carefully, you'll see that they are smoking very thin cigarettes, I believe they roll their own. That has been the answer to the cigarette price increase in the past ten years or so. No filters, things don't get better! :-(
Comment dit-on?
Addiction?
Vous avez dit?
La mort est au bout du rouleau.
interesting facts nathalie, love the photo.
happy theme day!
Yes... I know. I should stop smoking my "gauloises", at least stop the stupid habit of ligthtning one when I think about what comment to make on a post! :-)
But, as you know, a couple of decades ago, even doctors and father xmas encouraged smoking in the ads!
At least it has given us some nice songs!
(I read also the cigarette Brigetoun poem.)
I think the same problem exists here
A different take on the theme. I like it!
Nothing like a Gitanes and expresso to kick start the heart.
I miss them so.
