Friday 4 January 2013

Ta-daa!

On this 4th of January I'm finally getting round to sending my season's greeting card. Hurray. The date means a lot to me : this morning I finally returned the keys to my Avignon apartment to my landlord. Empty, clean, painted anew. How many hours of work do these three words represent? Anyone who's moved recently would remember (can you?). Anyway it's finally over and I can officially say that a new life starts for me today, even though in actual fact the move took place earlier (I haven't slept here in over a month).
What can these naked walls say about the five years I've lived there? Probably not much now that they've been stripped of all that made them home to me. You'd probably stand a far better chance of finding the spirit of these five years in this blog, which I started when I moved in. From the first "view from my window" I posted in October 2007 to the latest ones, what a journey it's been... I like that my move coincides with a new year.  I'm moving forward with confidence. I hope that for you too 2013 is off to a good start too.

As one who has moved frequently, I have come to welcome whatever is new as an old friend. I trust the same will be true for you.

Being one of your few readers who has had the pleasure of visiting there, I know you gave up a delightful place. However, you gained something even more wonderful.

Carolyn and I have been in our home for 24 years, I think. We have vowed to each other than the next move is into the nursing home. It would take a team of university archeologists ages to clean out our basement.

I'm so happy for you.

Good on ya for doing all that painting and cleaning. I've been through that a few times and it's not much fun.

Here's to a new year and a new start!

Faire place nette. Débarrasser le plancher.
Inventorier, ranger, classer, trier
Éliminer, jeter, fourguer
Casser
Brûler
Descendre, desceller, déclouer, décoller, dévisser, décrocher
Débrancher, détacher, couper, tirer, démonter, plier, couper
Rouler
Empaqueter, emballer, sangler, nouer, empiler, rassembler, entasser, ficeler, envelopper, protéger, recouvrir, entourer, serrer
Enlever, porter, soulever
Balayer
Fermer
Partir

Recette

Prenez un toit de vieilles tuiles
Un peu avant midi.

Placez à côté
Un tilleul déjà grand
Remué par le vent.

Mettez au-dessus d’eux
Un ciel de bleu, lavé
Par des nuages blancs.

Laissez-les faire,
Regardez-les.

You're doing it ALL WRONG! First you paint out the corners with BRUSH and THEN you use the roller...

jb in Mainz - I disagree totally. Admittedly my technique only works if you paint the corners with brush once the work you've done with the roller is dry enough but the benefits are HUGE :
1. You do the maximum with the roller and only do what you must with the brush. If you did otherwise you might find yourself doing more than you need with the brush, just in case.
2. Once you're finished with the roller you pour the paint back into the can BUT you use the brush to finish off using the remainder of the paint left into the (here blue) paint dispenser : no paint wasted.

I definitely prefer my technique!
