Home and Away

After much hard work spent on moving into my new home, it was time for a short break. I've been away for a few days. Can my sagacious readers guess where?

Non, Chri a raison, on dirait plutôt Lastours.

I don't know where it is, but I can eliminate places. It is not Hartford . . .

I don't know the French countryside well enough to have a guess but the pictures cause two reactions:

1. If I drive out in the Missouri countryside all I'm going to see is a fishing cabin, a rural bar or a meth lab.

2. Sure am glad I have central hearing and air conditioning.

My post for Sunday morning credits your work as the inspiration.

Some of my French readers found the answer : this castle is Peyrepertuse, located south of Carcassonne at the foot of the Pyrenees mountain range (of which you can see some white summits in the distance). The site is absolutely spectacular. In season (most of the year) an entry fee of 8.50 euros applies, which includes the use of an audioguide. In January the office is closed and access is free. We walked up there and had the site to ourselves. No other visitor apart from one lone man who was walking down as we were climbing up. Can you imagine the luxury of having such a site to yourself ? It was extraordinary.

Built in the 12th century, this ruined fortress is closely associated with the history of the Cathar religion in the 13th century. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peyrepertuse for more details.

How beautiful. I regret not visiting when I lived in the Pyrenees - went to Carcassone and didn't see anything with all the tourists. this looked like heaven.
