Prison Inside

Prison Sainte Anne, Avignon
Don't let the bright colours fool you : nothing joyful here, this used to be Avignon's jail.
Located in the city's historic centre very near to the Popes' Palace, it was in a poor state when it was finally abandoned in 2003 in favour of brand new premises located a few kilometres out of town. For several years it remained empty and untouched (see my 2011 photos here and there). In 2010 there were rumours that it got sold to the Marriott chain to be revamped as a five-star hotel. However the deal fell through.
The latest developments are amazing : the prison has just reopened as a showcase for contemporary art. Collection Lambert, Avignon's private art museum whose own premises are currently closed for refurbishment and extension, elected to use the prison instead to display their collections. Until 2015, don't miss this chance to visit a place that's truly out of the ordinary. If you visit, make sure you give yourself enough time : the circuit is huge with every cell hosting an artwork (sometimes a video) or occasionally a prison archive. Allow for two or three hours to see it all.

That's actually a good use for the place!

We have an old jail here- part of it is a youth hostel, and part is a jail museum.

Fascinating.
But sad to think of the people in there when it was a jail and before that, a hospital.

This looks like a fabulous transformation. I'd love to come see it. If only there were no need for prisons and all of them could be turned in art galleries. "You may call me a dreamer..."

Oh, and good luck with the festival... I hope some of it can be saved.

Tu me donnes vraiment envie d'aller y faire un tour.

I am delighted that we will be in your area while this is in progress. I just forwarded the link to Carolyn. It's on the list.

I am impressed. It is now colorful and works well for the museum.

Really cool idea! Kind of creepy though...

How fascinating. I was pulled into the photograph by the color and design and your story line filled in the blanks. We have an old Insane Asylum nearby which has been remodeled into condominiums, and quaint shops and restaurants. But they have kept part of the original asylum and done something similar. It's morbidly intriguing.
