Art or what?

Avignon's museum of modern art, the Collection Lambert, currently displays a rather intriguing work of art on its outside wall along boulevard Raspail . It reads Priez comme nous - pray like us.
On my photo, the shadows of the plane trees across the street add a whole new dimension to the piece, but do nothing to help understand it. What cryptic message is it supposed to convey? As is the rule with conceptual art, the author probably produced a lengthy paper destined to enlighten our souls as to the depth and breadth of the message, but I haven't read it. Would you like to try and make up your own? It could be fun!

Pray with open eyes, perhaps? Whenever I do that my grandson reminds me to close my eyes.

Just makes me think that "Big Brother" (the government) is watching me!

Chriscot, bel humour

Oh I love your suggestions!
Personally at this stage, I'm with anonymous.
I see it as a charge against intolerance, against the dangerous people who want the rest of the world to "pray like us" - and prepared to go to war for that, if that reminds you of something. We should keep our eyes open against it. But that's only my interpretation, what else can you can come up with?

I would be surprised if there really is something religious behind this message, but as proposed above, hopefully something against intolerance! Can you please try to get hold of that lengthy document you are referring to? I would SO much like to read it!
Hope the sun is still shining over there, as it did when you took your photo with the nice shadow!

Interesting post and message. I just saw a story about our universe and the demise of the sun. We will need more than prayers in 50 million years and that part really bothers me.

Err, no! Thanks but no thanks.
I have been enjoying reading about Cravaggio lately, and might stick to that for a while. Though as the Bad Boy of 400 years ago Rome I am sure he perplexed, amazed and frustrated many....and lots of words have been written since his more recent "rediscovery"!

Sorry I have not dropped in much lately; haven't been too well - just able to maintain my own daily postings. But hopefully I am on the mend again. And ready for travels

Terrific capture, and love the silhouette shadow of the tree over this eye!
Speaking of 'eyes' you have a wonderful one for photography! As well as a talent for words (in French and English!)
I am anxious to view all your work!

I see a very sad eye Nathalie, backdrop though it is to your plane tree shadows. I think it is an Arabian eye or perhaps an African or Indian or Bangladeshi. Someone with enormous trouble, hoping for something, anything. As long as it is not an invitation to pray 5 times a day ... I'll pop back later to see what the answer is.
As much of Maxime's that I could read without resorting to a dictionary, I think that he must be a poet at heart!

Between spirituality and mythology, the author slips into the crack; both voyeur and visionary, the eye is both an
invocation of the mystery and transcendence thereof. The Cyclops looks at Ulysses, but what does he see? The "We" (Nous) relates back to lost innocence, to the stake that soon will pierce the unique eye. Through this invocation, the author invites us to join him in an recursive approach of the artwork's identity, with the watcher now being watched and the eye facing the eye: the eye that on the American dollar contemplates the universe over the Masonic triangle maçonique. You will surely have understood "at the first glance" that this work is a powerful protest against the spiritualistic vision that America tries to impose on the rest of the world.

Maxime adds: "I'm a lover of modern art but I can't read a catalogue without bursting into laughter."

I hope my translation does justice to the original. If it's unclear at times, that's perfectly normal. Maxime did a fantastic job at copying the unmistakable style of these catalogues. Thanks Maxime for a great laugh.

Oh it's totally George Orwell's 1984-esque! Brrrr. But I like it :-)

I love the photo with those shadows. I don't like the words and that eye at all. I find it invasive and elitist in some way. And scary.

ichandrae said...

Nathalie H.D. said...

I finally went back to the museum to ask for more information about the author of this work. Her name is Barbara Kruger and she specialises in works similar to this, a black and white photo in very large format associated with with a caption in white letters on a red background. He aim is to generate a reflexion about the relation between man and society or religion.

I'm a bit late on this. Not a fan of conceptual art but...

This reminds me of posters that appear on churches. The fact that it appears on a non-church, but an establishment of "worship" might have something to do with the message. But then with conceptual art we never know if there is a message or if "any message is the message" or "just make up your own"
