Chômage

Chômage in French means unemployment. The term is also used for the period during which a canal is emptied each year for clean-up and repairs - meaning forced stop-work for barge operators of course. Never any traffic on the Carpentral canal however ; it is only used for irrigation.

Le chômage désigne la période durant laquelle un canal est vidé chaque année pour être nettoyé et réparé ou consolidé, ce qui signifie évidemment le chômage forcé pour les mariniers. Mais point de trafic sur le canal de Carpentras, il ne sert qu'à l'irrigation.

A metaphor for both of our countries. Nevertheless, I can imagine a pleasant rowboat or kayak tour through here in the summer.

Well how about that. I didn't know the second use of this word.

Note: I think that complicated word verification has just started as I found it on several blogs this morning. Anyway mine is removed for the moment... thanks Nathalie x

Je ne connaissais pas cette utilisation du terme "chômage". Mais ta photo le rend bien, être au chômage, c'est être un peu en attente. La nature semble en attente, un peu plus de soleil et de chaleur. Les arbres attendent de retrouver leurs petites feuilles.

It`s good to know about 'chomage'. I was shocked to see the other day my beloved Canal du Midi which was empty.

Et la gente poissonne, que devient-elle en ces temps de chômage?

The reflection is great Nathalie. And thanks for the micro French lesson. A new one for me.
