Colliding events

Clash of events! On this sunny Saturday afternoon, the very noisy Carnival drum band and its cohort of costumed children marched through Villeneuve's main street, arriving in front of the Town Hall just as a newlywed couple was coming out. Delighted with this fun opportunity, the drum band invited the bride and groom to take the lead of the march, which they did at the sound of loud percussions and followed by a large, colourful and festive crowd. Not your usual wedding march for sure!

Here's a collage of photos of the Carnaval. You must click on the image to enlarge it, it'll give you a much better appreciation of the event: an unpretentious village fête delivering great family fun. The children had a wonderful time. The samba-style music was by local percussions band Totoutart's, all dressed in orange.

Just a note about "carnaval": the word in France traditionally describes a march through streets with floats and costumes taking place in February during mardi-gras.
But February is usually a lousy month for outdoor pursuits in Provence, delivering either heavy rains or icy-cold mistral winds. In recent years the religious association with mardi-gras has become looser and Carnaval tends to become more of a Spring festival taking place later in season. Indeed the weather yesterday was just perfect for such an event.

Villeneuve-lez-Avignon (litterally "Newtown by Avignon")being only a village, there were no floats here, just the drum band and children in costumes.

When my kids were little, Avignon used to host a fairly large Carnaval with floats and all, but if I remember well the new mayor Marie-José Roig decided to cut all funding for this event, and it disappeared twelve years ago or so.

Well, you must have a sense of humor to lead this march, so this is a good sign for their marriage, after all, because sense of humor is necessary in many situations in the life of a couple. It is a wonderful photo, congratulations!

The link is priceless! Your bridal photo is a delight; it may not be a traditional march but certainly a memorial one for the couple. (I'm still laughing about the other one!)

What a lucky couple. This must bring good luck Nathalie, yes?

What a great post. Love the carnival photographs and how fabulous to see this newly married couple all mixed up in it. They won't forget their wedding in a hurry! Hopefully they wouldn't anyway.

And thanks for the link to that great photo of Lisa's.

re kissing - yes, when you great someone. I find people here kiss twice or three times. Would I be right? Perhaps I've lived here too long and have forgotten to notice? I normally kiss twice but obviously three times if someone kisses me three times.

Thank you and many thanks also for your comment on my site!

Have a pleasant week, Nathalie!

Excellent set of photographs. I suppose it will be a day that the young couple will never forget.

Did you ever see a tiny fly hanging on the edge of a honey bee's wing?

Abraham Lincoln in Brookville, Ohio had a picture of one that he took.

This marriage has certainly gone off with a real bang hey???

What a lovely young couple and I'm sure they will laugh about it after they have been married as long as moi - 30 years next year!!!!

To tell you the truth Jules I was suprised to see the couple split just after I took the second photo. The bride turned back and went on walking with a couple of her girl friends, leaving the groom to lead the troops and finish off on his own the rest of the two-minute walk to the car. I couldn't believe she couldn't stay at his arm that long...

One minute, the French nick our pelicans, the next minute, nos épouvantails, (our scarecrows).
We don't mind however when we see a post as nice as this one.

What a memorable wedding celebration, this must have been, and thanks for the link to the Chinese bride. She was also keeping her legs warm in those denim high fashion jeans, under the wedding dress.
Or was she a camionneuse, about to start her shift in 1/2 an hour?

What a gorgeous day for the carnival, love all your portraits - but especially love the photograph of the crowd with the bride and groom in the center capped at the end with the street sign 'exclamation' mark - a fitting conclusion to the event!!!

Ha ha what a moemorable couple of weddings.
