The ubiquitous hat

In Australian schools the motto is "no hat, no play": you're not allowed out to play unless you wear a hat. The rule is pretty much the same here at the festival. Over the past few days we've had a cool spell where perhaps they weren't absolutely necessary but with temperatures hitting 86-89° again, hats are back in force. Straw hats seem to be the biggest hit. Let's see what's in fashion at the moment...Dans toutes les écoles australiennes la règle d'or c'est "no hat, no play" : on ne sort pas jouer dehors sans chapeau.

I especially like the shot of the three ladies in the green aprons... there is something charming about them...

I love hats. I think people don't wear enough hats, women especially. Here in Seattle's suburbia, all you see are baseball hats. I was thrilled when my 11-year old started wearing fedora hats a few months ago. A little bit of style never hurts ;-) Veronique aka French Girl in Seattle

Love those three ladies with the see-through umbrella!
I am tempted to steal the gentleman's hat in the bottom picture. ;-)

Fort instructif, professeur.

I like the trumpet player's straw hat the best! March on!

Those are wonderful, Nathalie. I never liked wearing hats, but my dermatologist read me the riot act recently, warning about skin cancer, so this summer I have begun wearing straw hats. There are some nice looking straw hats in this series.

And then there's "Slip,slap,slop"
Try translating THAT!

jb - translate slip slap slop? My daughters and I tried many times and always failed miserably. Last time we tried was last week.

Nice hat series.

we really don't wear a lot of hats here unfortunately, boys/men wear ball caps and women/men wear straw hats when during the summer, unless of course you count hat day at the kentucky derby! wish hats were more popular really!

I love hats, but we just don't wear them much here. After a recent bout with skin cancer I have my first real hat - not a cap or sporty affair, but a real, wide-brimmed hat. Staw:) I love it.

Terrific idea for a post's theme. I particularly like what we call a pork pie hat on the trumpeter.

Do you have the Red Hat Ladies society in France? If not, I'll explain later.

I really like that one with the trumpet...

I love hats and am so glad they are making a comeback. In southern California, we are seeing a big resurgence of men's hats for ladies. A very fashionable post!

Chapeau !

Slip, slap slop:

Précautions contre le soleil :
Enfilez un t-shirt (slip)
Mettez de la crème (slap)
Mettez un chapeau (slop)

Slip on a t-shirt,
Slop on some sun screen,
Slap on a hat.

Seek some shade (Cherchez l'ombre)

Bob I've heard of the red hat society but I don't think it exists in France.
...
In fact I just looked it up and apparently there are only 3 Red Hat Society chapters in France, one in Normandy (not sure where the other two are) which was created by a British expat lady and is entirely made up of English-speaking expats. To my knowledge no true French equivalent exists.

Tilia said...

Here the men wear the incessant baseball caps, even indoors. I am old fashioned enough to think it's rude. Now about Monsieur, that isn't his hat is it? :)

I interested to read that there are rules in the schools about wearing hats outside. Of course we get the hat thing all screwed up!
