Iconoclast(e)

Rue Grivolas, AvignonThe Avignon Festival, 6-26 July 2011, starts tonight.
Above is the official poster, below is a twisted version by an iconoclast*.
"Easy but ever so tempting !" says the hand-written note at the bottom. Indeed ! Finger play, no more? For a long time there's been a rivalry between the official theatre festival organised by the Ministry of Culture, "le in", often resented as elitist and snobbish, and its fringe counterpart "le off", whose vitality explodes with hundreds of shows and plays performed everywhere in town down to the smallest garages set up as pocket theatres. This rivalry explains the fuck in, fuck off line.
* iconoclast : a breaker or destroyer of images, especially those set up for veneration.

I imagine there is room for the establishment and for the challengers. I am reminded of Monet and others beginning by being outsiders, rejected by the establishment salons. The judging will take place in a decade and then again in a century.

merci Nathalie!on commence!

Hasn't there always been an 'off' theatre as it were. Love these two posters - only in Avignon!

Chri - Ah ?

well, you can't please every one Nathalie can you ?. You can't be too happy with nature too. One part of the world is praying for some sunlight and we here in Chennai too much of it and we are praying for some rain.

Those who are not elitist and snobbish always wish they were. They form the majority. Though the government is supposed to be of the people by the people for the people, but Their first priority is to keep the rich elite safe and happy. They don't care much for the majority. So the frustrations flare up.

Oh How are you dear Nathalie ? Hope you and your dear daughter are doing fine.

how very interesting...as here in Orange County CA we have the same battle that has gone on for decades..literally.....in Laguna Beach, an art community...........there is the Pageant of the Masters which represents a "certain" type of art and performance....and then the "Sawdust Festival"....started years ago by those who were rejected by the judges at the Pageant.....and the separation caused a great rift between the 2 factions years ago
