Sea birds? no sea

Palais des Papes
Am I wrong to think that seagulls used to be confined to seashore areas? There definitely seems to be a general trend of seeing them move inland - in search of easier food now that the fish is becoming more scarce in our seas and oceans? Anyway, despite Avignon being located some eighty kilometres from the Mediterranean, seagulls are part of daily life here. Standing next to someone feeding them bread is a great way to catch them in action - we are standing on the island of La Barthelasse here and the river Rhone separates us from the Popes Palace.

I love seagulls. In my canadian city they are so common that they are taken for granted but to me they are exotic like messengers from a far way indescribable sea.

Fantastic photo(s)!!!

You are right; even in some Paris parks I have now a feeling that there are more seagulls than pigeons! Even, the famous St.Mark in Venice, famous for its pigeons, had more seagulls then pigeons beginning December (but of course the place was flooded - and is near to the sea).

I agree. Imagine my surprise to find them in Oklahoma City. There is a lake within the city limits and several rivers, but it still surprises me to see them fly overhead.

Great photographs. Sea birds like the gulls in the shots tend to be drawn inland by human rubbish!

In the UK large council dumps are teeming with them even though they are miles from the sea.

If there is even a hint of a chip, you can find a seagull!

Nathalie the top photo is just glorious! You caught them perfectly in flight.

As long as I remember they've always come inland in winter. It's not about the scarcity of food in the sea, but more that they've learned that there are easy pickings in cities.

Actually, I'm reading 'La Rue des Malefices' at the moment, which describes the Paris of the 1940s and 50s. Without having it open in front of me right now, the author says something along the lines of 'the winter will be very cold this year - the seagulls are already in Paris and it's only September'.

Gulls are so common inland in Scotland that they're known as 'hill gulls'. They come inland to make their nests in spring, often in the heather.

Beautiful photo - although gulls in cities are not my favourite thing, this shot brings out the best in them!

Fabulous shot, Nathalie. I can't comment because I'm near to the sea anyway but reading the comments it seems this is the usual thing, especially in winter. Adam's comment is fascinating about Paris of long ago.

I have to say seagulls are sometimes (maybe always) and have threatened small dogs here and one hears of them swooping down on people and scaring them. Maybe worse, I don't know.

"Belles gulls" ! J'aime beaucoup...
Et "un peu givrée" en plus...

Looking more closely, I see that they are black headed gulls (mouette rieuse), a gull that loses its black head in winter (it keeps one little spot) and has a tendancy to come inland.

Here's the exact quote from 'Rue des Maléfices' speaking about the situation in 1941 - "L'hiver sera rude.

Gulls now in the UK still inhabit mainly coastal areas but they are spotted inland. The gulls here seem to know the tourists and fly at their ice creams

I have even seen the odd seagull here in Colorado Springs! I can't imagine being more landlocked than 6,000+ feet above sea level in the Rocky Mountains. Where do they come from?

Fantastic images! I love any photos of birds in flight, even seaqulls.

Hello! I just popped over here from David's blog!! Nice to have found your lovely blog! You have some fine photographs! I'll be stopping back again...
As for the seagulls... they are SUCH scavengers, aren't they? I was surprised to see them in Paris, since there is DEFINITELY NO ocean nearby... I remember seeing them a lot on school campuses around lunch time, too... back in San Diego (but nowhere near the ocean).
Take care, Leesa

I am another fellow traveller from David's City of Lights Blog. What fantastic pictures, they bring back many happy memories of the week or so i spent in Avignon whilst treking round France with my girlfriend many year ago.

Definitely not your imagination. Think about the Seagull as a Mormon church symbol ... and how many hundreds of miles Salt Lake City is from either ocean. Nice composition, by the way. Always good to find cooperative birds -:)
