World Cup, The End

Avignon, place PieWhen these photos were taken, exactly a week ago on Thursday 17 June, our country was still in the football world cup. France was in its first minutes of playing against Mexico and although their chances were slim, French supporters were all ready to give it their best shot. They gathered en masse in front of the large outdoor screen set up by the Red Sky pub & cafe on place Pie... to watch the French lose 2-0. But the worse was yet to come. After another defeat yesterday against South Africa (2-1), it's a first round exit for the French team who flew home last night. "Pitiful, ridiculous, shameful" are just a few words you'll read in the French press to comment the disaster. My opinion? Owing its qualification to a hand, the French team stole Ireland's place. They showed that they didn't deserve to go to South Africa in the first place. A sad state of affairs.
Is your country taking part in the football world cup? Is it an event that you follow? Do you care? I'm honestly not into it at all but it's hard not to hear about it and since the Red Sky is a stone's throw from where I live it was hard not to go and watch... not the game, but the supporters!

I feel sorry for the French supporters but certainly not for the team - you are right, Nathalie, they did not deserve to be there! Next match to watch: Germany against England - a classic!

Oui, l'Irlande !

Yes, I'm in the States, I also am a fan of Italy, & several other places I have lived in or visited extensively. I lived the most (other than here) in France. I am so embarrassed by their behavior. It really was shocking. Temper tantrums are never attractive but an entire team?! They did not deserve to be there because of what happened with Ireland, for sure. Still...once they got there, they should have been excited & played. Like they are supposed to. What a come down from 2006. But also, if you (or your readers) will recall there was a very nasty headbutting incident from a French player on an Italian player in the final. I was sitting with American fans in their house & they all looked at me. Like I'm supposed to explain. I just shook my head. (Not that the Italians are angels. No. But again, it was a terrible thing to witness.)

That said, I'm happy for the US because, among other things, it means that many people who grew up playing here are very interested. This makes them part of the world...if that's what does it, fine with me. At least they will know some geography:)

Cheers

Oh my...the verification word is 'loses' - :)

A circus... but the clowns are looking rather sad... nothing sader than tears on a clown in fact...

I also mentioned the WC on a post today... emphasis on WC.

Magnifique photo Nathalie.

My country, Poland, has so poor football players ;-(((
My favourite team in world cup is Argentina or Spain. I love Lionel Messi :-)))

Excellent photography.

The US is still in it or was. I enjoy watching it every day when it comes on cable.

Don't forget Nathalie that the Avignon (Arles) team were promoted to the Ligue 1 earlier this year, despite having the smallest budget in the second division. Football isn't always about money!

well,
i'm not a fan
of many (or any) sports,
but as you note, it's hard to ignore an event as big this

you've captured some really lively images here, nathalie -- gorgeous color & action -- excellent!

It was fun being in Paris for the WC. Peter and I looked in on the last game from a seat outside overlooking the Stravinsky Fountain. I"m not a soccer fan but I was really pulling for France. Quelle dommage. :(

I'm back home finally and with a heavy heart. I'm trying to visit all my dear friends that I haven't seen while I was gone. I did so enjoy talking to you while in Paris. It was good to hear your voice!! Do you SKYPE? Maybe we can do that sometime. Jilly and I are planning on it. :)

Great shots. I've not seen anything like this interest in Menton. Perhaps everyone looks on television?

Personally I'm not interested although I do remember getting excited when England won the World Cup in 1966. I was staying in a very cold caravan at the time listening to it on the radio! How times change.
