Quiz

This is where I was yesterday - out of town, south of Avignon. Can you guess what these white mountains are and where this is? I'm sure my local readers can help, but perhaps they should let others search a bit first. Answer tomorrow.

Could this be the leftovers from a talcum mine?

Salt from the Camargue.

I think salt too, but have no idea where. This would make a very good and unusual sky watch Friday photo.

This looks like snow or ice. LOL I can't imagine what it is.

Ah, I thought for a second sand but of course, having read those before me, salt. Has to be. Look forward to the answer.

Bonjour Nathalie.

For a minute I thought you had a photograph of the sand on our Alabama and Florida Gulf coast beaches! The sand is just that white. I would have guessed sand, but cheated and read a few above and will probably go with sel, too.

I have been trying to open this for ages. That's amazing and so beautiful considering it's salt.

Bergson was commenting: doesn't anyone eat any salt? I took a similar photo 3 year ago!
The interesting bit is that by August 2010, the whole series of mountains had disappeared. The winter of 2009-2010 was very cold with masses of snow throughout France and tons of salt were spread on the roads to help it melt.

Now (summer 2011) the salt supply hasn't recovered. No more salt hills to be seen at this stage. I'll keep monitoring the situation to see how long it takes to rebuild such huges supplies.
