Kite snow ?

Mont VentouxI went up to Mount Ventoux on Sunday afternoon, hoping for a ray of sunshine that would let me take nice snow photos - no such luck, the sky remained a deep and solid grey and the wind was a bitter easterly. Nevertheless I went for a brisk walk for an hour or so, enjoying the views. Avignon is somewhere in the plains way below in the background.
The snow was hardly 5 to 10 cms deep and the ski runs were closed but a couple of adventurous guys had found an area where deeper snow enabled them to practice their sport. One had small skis on, the other had a snowboard but both were pulled by kites. Great stuff, no need for a ski lift to drag you up the mountain! I wonder what this sport's name is? The equivalent on sea is called kite surf but what is it called when practiced on snow? Kite skiing? Snow kite? Do you know?

I think it's called snow kite, but I'm not positive. So fun to see it! I actually just saw people skiing for the first time yesterday (in real life, not on television). One day I might be brave enough to go...

Bonjour! In Canada, we call it kite boarding when used with a snowboard or snow kiting when used with skies.

This couldn't be France!!! Oh my Nathalie, how wonderful and fun!

I believe the kite is actually called a parasail and if in the air altogether it's called parasailing. Lovely in spite of no sunshine -:)

Kite skiing. Beautiful view from the Ventoux!

Kite's gueule? (Pardon...)

Nathalie H.D. said...

Chuck, it isn't parasailing: in parasailing you run (or ski down a slope) to gather speed and then you take off for a flight. Here they were on the ground all the time apart from the occasional jump to change directions.

I guess cdblueberry got it right.
In Canada they would know!!! :-)

I have been reading up on our Vancouver olympics today so I was kind of curious about looking this up (ofcourse this isn't a sport in the olympics) anyway wikipedia says that kite surfing can be applied to using the board or skies to be drawn by the kite but it is also correct to use kite boarding and snow kiting-I found that in the dictionnary.

In the alpine skiing they are going to ski down an icy slope @ 130 km per hour! what some people have to do to not be bored ha ha.

Wow, exciting stuff.
TOO exciting for me to try. :)

Jilly said...

No idea what it's called but your Canadian commenter has doubtless got it right. How utterly fabulous and great shots.

mire said...

Yes Dina and I would have to add that living in the middle east would be too exciting for me to try ha ha.

HUGS DINA I just couldn't resist saying that!

That's fun :)

Michel Benoit said...

C'est du parapente à ski.
Je serais bien monté là-haut !

Nathalie H.D. said...

Michel Benoit said...

Français ou anglais, ça se ressemble bien :

http://www.vacances-neige-auvergne.fr/snow-kite.php
C'est une question d'altitude, quoi.

Il est beau ton appareil !

Muriel said...

Nathalie H.D. said...

Fardoise said...

Davine said...

Kite Skiing sounds good - but it also looks to scarey for me.

AnneduSud said...

Nathalie H.D. said...

Pauvre petite Anne, tu vas me faire pleurer ! :-)))

mire said...

mire said...

Michel Benoit said...

Ce doit être une question d'habitude.

Here in Victoria Canada I've heard it called para skiing many times. Trianna.

Bises Nath !

Well, whatever it's called, it looks like fun, if one has enought space for it... imagine, this will free people from only going downhill at the alpine ski stations, and will take some of the hard work out of cross country... They are going to have to create downhill and uphill lanes at the ski areas, so people kite skiing back up the mountain won't get in the way of those coming down...

Best wishes to you Nathalie for 2010 !

hi, in the US it's called snow sailing & when they do it on the ice it's ice sailing. hope i helped gio

Nathalie H.D. said...

Thanks Decorator for the U.S. version of the name. There seems to be a variety of names for this sport, not even consistent between the U.S. and Canada.

Virginia said...

Oh and what's it called???? CRAZY!!

Bonjour! Nathalie,
Nathalie said,"when practiced on snow? Kite skiing? Snow kite? Do you know?

Oh! No, Nathalie, but all your readers, (commenters) name(s), suggestions, etc, etc, etc... for this sport sound great to me!
Merci de partager!

Thanks to all for your most interesting input. It appears that some of these new sports still have evolving names as they develop.

So far we've had the following:

- Snow sailing
- Snow kite
- Para skiing
- Kite boarding
- Kite skiing

And I suspect all are correct in their respective parts of the world.

Nathalie H.D. said...
